I believe charcoal canister controls the fuel vapors, and if you take it off, it will smell like rottin eggs or something, but that's just what I heard.

It removes the water created in the combustion process and crankcase ventilation by purging the vapors into your motor while you're driving.

No advantages whatsoever. It would be a minus if your removed it. You need it like you need your spark plugs.

Either that or replace it. The charcoal canister's condition on the inside is what really matters.

No clue. Don't buy a new one unless your sure yours is no longer efficient. You can use canisters off of other cars too. It's possible that you can get one to work with a custom setup if you don't want to buy one.

mine went bad and it smelled of gas really bad, I got a new one and it cost $46.00, but that was about 5 years ago.
p.s. the reason mibe went bad is because I bought a cheap gas cap and it dod not have a good seel.

if u have the canister in the top of the air filterlid (early model's) not the sperate unit..
it is advised that u check it and give it a shake to see if anything falls out.. the mesh on the bottom of the lit was known for braking and charcol could get into ur engine..

My dealer parts tech. told me he had never sold a replacement charcoal cannister for FBs when I asked when it needs replacing. He said that was due to the SE not having enough vaccuum hoses to ever make much heavy use of the cannister. The FDs definately are supposed to replace them as they have many more vaccuum hose, airflow, gas fumes, etc. Otherwise I would have just replaced it in the interest of replacing all filters, hoses, worn sensors, etc. on an old car I just got 2 yrs. ago.
