I am going to install a used transmission. What will I need? What should I replace while I have it out? It is a 5speed gsl.

Thanks

Also how old/worn out is your clutch and pressure plate?

I would replace the throw out bearing and pilot bearing as a matter of course and the clutch if its not fairly new. If you do replace the clutch then you need to have the fly wheel resurfaced, and since its off then a new rear main seal is in order.

If your clutch is fairly new and if money is very tight then leave it all in there, all you need is transmission fluid.

'Tell us more about your situation. Is the car stock? Aftermarket exhaust? If the stock exhaust is still in place then you will need some kind of penetration fluid to loosen rusted on nuts and bolts.

The Car is a 84 GSL. The transmission bearings are bad. The car is mostly stock. just rat's nest delete and dual alt pulley. I have no info on the clutch age. But does not feel like it is slipping at all. The car has 155000 miles.
The new transmission is from an 81-85. It is a 5 speed. I just brought the car 2 weeks ago. I would like to leave the clutch in there if possible. I have a lot of other things to get.. (water pump, 4 new tires for the fb, 2 new tires and a powerFC for my wifes FD) But if there are parts the should be replaced as part of changing the transmission, i will. I have Redline Mt-90 fluid ready for it.

I would at least pull the pressure plate off while the tranny is out to see what the disk looks like, if it has some life left in it I would probably leave everything as is and stick the new tranny in.

It's not too bad of a job. Helped dad replace his a couple of times recently and had mine apart when swapping motors. As others said, check what everything looks like. Pilot bearing is cheap but can be a pain to pull. Flywheel and pressure plate wear.

Other than that, something to hold it when you pull it loose, and tons of patience!

oh, the clutch alignment tool is a lifesaver, Racing Beat has a decent price for pilot bearing installer and you can 'borrow' pilot bearing removal tool from Advance.

Good luck!
