Center link install

Got an 84 SE that I'm attempting to re-install the center link in. The center link is tapered on the driver's side & I can't get the darned thing back on. It is supposed to go on the steering link which terminates in a ball & the ball is bouncing around when I try to align the center link. Is there some trick that someone has used that I'm missing?

Thanx in advance

Bob
