catalytic converter 84 gsl-se

I have an 84 GSL-SE. (13B)
My catalytic converter is no longer any good. The State I am in doesn't require emmissions testing for such an old vehicle.
Do I need the catalytic converter?
Can I run a straight pipe instead? (pros/cons)

Thanks in Advance

If you do not have a mandatory sniffer test then you can replace it with a straight pipe or run a header system.
As far as laws go. Even if you are exempt from any type of testing the law still states that whatever emission equipment the car came with must be on the car. However it is rarely enforced.
As far as choices for replacement.
Do a search using the words converter replacement pipe or header system. There are a bizillion threads on this topic.

Finally got my search to work.... funny how things work better when you log in

From What I can see....
Small gain in HP...
Large Gain in Noise
No special modification needed...

Overall looks like I will probably replace the cat....

Thnaks for the replies...

With the catalytic converter pipe that mazdatrix or racing beat there is a substantial increase in HP. It replaces the front small cats and the main cat.
The noise level is not much louder than stock and if you go with the prima flow muffler they offer then there will be more HP and a better exhaust tone.
