Carter Fuel pump location

I want to put my carter pump in the stock location but im having some trouble getting it to fit under the fuel pump cover thing. Is it alright just to leave the cover off and the pump exposed?

I would like it to have a cover but...

I saw an '80 yesterday that had a Carter and no cover. All three of my Carters don't have covers.

I don't have a cover on my holley pump, it wouldn't go back on with the line fittings I used.
I'd say your fine with no cover as long as you stay on pavement, but if you really want one you could just bend one out of some sheet metal (ie stop sign) and screw it in place over the pump.

Umm... isn't there a major danger with mounting Holleys and Carters horizontally like that? I know that the Mallory I bought couldn't be mounted in the stock location because of risk of FIRE

Someone please chime in on this, I don't wanna see you guys' cars catch fire!

I remember reading on mine (carter pump) that it has to be mounted vertically. Thought it also said something along the lines of it being bad to for the pump life to be moutned horizontally... don't know about the catching fire thing.

It's going to be awfully low if you mount it vertically in the stock location. There's a spot thats perfect for it on the chassis rail just where it starts to kick up over the rear axle.

Yep, thats where I have mine too. Should work out just fine. I don't have a cover on mine either, been on for about 8 months now. Just can't keep the Fuel pressure up, so I am switching to a holley red, just to play around. Good luck.
