Carpet Dye and stock radio questions

I've got a couple of questions about my hatch carpet and my stock radio.

My hatch carrpet is in mint condition other than the fact that after 24 years the sun has bleached it white (from maroon). Is it possible to dye it baback to the original (or close) color?. I remember reading a thread where someone said the dye didn't work on the hatch but did everywhere else. Also my stock premium radio/cassette player is shot but I can get one from an '85 GSL for very cheap, will it work on an '83?. I would get an aftermarket deck but I need to keep the car stock in order to qualify for collector's insurance.

Thanks in advance,

Luis

Luis,

You are correct on the hatch carpet. It will not accept the dye. You can paint it using paint from SEM. I painted the hatch carpet on my Se black. It does not look as pristine as new carpeting but at least it blends in with the rest of the car.

I'll leave the radio question for someone that knows the answer, not my thing. :-)

The deck may not fit, is the dash in your 83 the same as the dash in a 84-85?

Thanks for the replies guys I'll measure the dimensions of the 85 radio and see if it fits in the 83. Now I've a question for the Dr., what kind of SEM paint did you use on the hatch carpet? (plastic, fabric, vinyl). Do you have any tips on how to paint it?

Cheers,

Luis

plastic, fabric, vinyl

Yes, all of the above. The SEM paint that I used is for all of the above. It states that on the can.

Best advice I can give you is to vacuum it well, then run it through the washing machine. Let air dry, then vacuum again and paint.

not sure if the 84/85 will wire up to the 81-83 sound system. i had 2 sets of those a while ago. try finding them on ebay. i have seen a few being sold in a store, not auction. good luck with your restoration

Just do what I do JVC boom box with built in subs and mp3 player.

Good at beach to take out and get the crowd pumping too. And you can take it in the house so it won't get stolen.

edit add: It's called a "kaboom" by JVC.

They do sound really good. Just put a strap on it so it won't fly around in an accident.
