Exclamation Carburetor rebuild - 1st gen

I recently purchased a 1985 RX-7 and I LOVE IT!

It has a type 12a engine, with manual transmission. I had an engine diagnostic done at a local Merchants store - engine was cutting out intermittently and the idle was variable-low. They have recommended a Carburetor rebuild - and do not have expertise to do it.

I am having trouble locating anyone in the Richmond, Virginia area to do this (no-one even knows how to spell "Carburetor" any more!). I also looked online for a replacement part, without success.

Can anyone help?

I bought an '83 last year that had sat for 13 years, and the first thing I did was rebuild the carb. Got a kit from Advance Auto Parts- about $50. If you have a digital camera and a computer, take lots of pictures! There's factory service manuals and a carb manual available online- find one of Trochoid's posts and see his signature line for the link. BTW, the bolt in the middle of the carb that holds the air filter on also holds the two halves of the carb together.

If you don't want to tackle a rebuild, check eBay parts- there's often a professionally rebuilt carb on there for about $350.

Also, I lived in Richmond from '77 - '87. My sone went to VCU in teh late '90's and lived in Richmond after he graduated. He moved to Pittsburg 1 1/2 years ago to go to dental school.

Good luck!

I rebuilt my carb with the infamous Haynes manual. I also ordered my carb rebuild kit form Advance Auto parts.

Swap out fuel filter first!! underneath in front of driver's REAR wheel. should be out int the open there... make sure the carb is actually GETTING fuel before you start dinking with the carb!

If you've bought an old RX-7, you must have some mechanical ability. Some is all you need.

They are easy to rebuild. Buy a kit, get yourself a Haynes manual, and hop to it. There is plenty of help here online if you run into trouble.

Cheers

Do a full tuneup and run a can of Seafoam through before you do the rebuild because it might not be needed at all.

1 can Seafoam + 1/8 - 1/4 tank of gas, then go for a drive.
