carburetor question 1981 rx7

This is not my car it is my brothers RX7. He has had some starting problems with his car. When he turns it on and the electric fuel pump starts , we looked down the carb you can see fuel pouring into it right down to the intake before starting the car. This would flood it right? Is it suppose to do this? Also it will not start even with starter fluid when we let it sit to clear out the fuel, and pulled the relay so it would not flood. Any help appreciated, because I have no idea about carburetors.

letting the car sit will not clear out the fuel. deflooding a rotary is an active process.

as far as fuel dumping in, could be any number of things, needles sticking, clogged jets. both. start by tapping the top of float chambers lightly with a hammer to knock the needles free. if that doesnt fix it, most likely time for a carb rebuild.

Once flooded, starter fluid can make starting even harder/impossible because it washes the oil coating from the housings that increases compression. Wet plugs don't spark across the gap and will not light the fuel mix. They must be cleaned and dried. I can usually get a flooded engine to fire cleaning only the leading plugs since the trailings do little other than cleaning up the unburned fuel mix.

Fuel should not be pouring into the carb, jets/floats are stuck open. If the car has sat for a period of time, a carb rebuild may be in order.

Thanks guys I will try to un-flood the engine and tap it with a hammer on the floats. Is it hard to rebuild a carb? Is there any step by step on this site that will guild me and my brother thought it?

In the faq, there's a link to Sgt. Fox's site, where he hosts nearly all the factory manuals.

The factory carb service manual is there, and is a detailed, step-by-step walk-through with excellent pictures, and tons of operational theory as well as the "how-to" parts.

All you need to do it right... well, that, and the ability to follow directions and pay close attention to detail.

Either you have replaced the fuel pump with something that is too strong for this application, or your float needles are stuck.

Clogged jets won't cause this, and jets can't get "stuck open".

Banging on the top of the carb with something that won't damage it usually does the trick.

For deflooding a rotary, clean the plugs off very well and then check to make sure that they are sparking before reinstalling them into the engine. Then, dump an ounce or two of Seafoam into the smaller barrels in the carb. That is usually enough to get one started again.

Best of luck...
