Several months ago I posted a note regarding carbon lock in my son's 1985 RX7. I tried several suggestions, more MMO, ATF, turning the flywheel directly with no luck. I let MMO sit for ~ 4 weeks without results. I then procured some Amsoil power foam based on another suggestion and used this over a several week period, when we turned the crank there was no significant resistance (plugs out) and it was able to turn over with the starter. 90 seconds of cranking (once Dave put the engine fuse back in) and it started. I just put it back on the road and it seems to be running OK.

BTW, I remember reading a web site somewhere that Powerfoam is what Mazda recommended to their mechanics for fixing carbon locked rotaries. Not sure if it's true but I figured I'd thow that out there.

That's so cool! It's also another nail in the coffin of the ATF myth. MMO was nice in my engine which had gummed up sluggish seals (from carbon mostly), but now I know what to use next time there's carbon lock.

 

BTW, the car became locked doing the MMO treatment to improve performance that I had read about in several threads.

I'm not badmouthing the treatment since my experience is a sample of one, but, if I had to do it again (especially on a car of unknown history) I would take the slower route and use techron or MMO in the gas. Alternatively I would use Powerfoam in its intended manner.
