Carbon Fibre update....

Okay boys....Lukus spoke to the guys and the outlook is bleak...perhaps

All of the money is spent in making the mold. The mold itself is roughly
double the price of the cast. So if it cost $2000AUD to make the bonnet
mold, the price of each cast after that would be $1000AUD.

Some of the more common bits for our cars I think can be covered, but Lukus
and myself dont have the start up cash to get a mold made of everything. I
think a fair deal is that if you contribute to the cost of the mold, any
money that is made from subsequent sales of casts is distributed amongst the
original contributors.

Any thoughts or comments?

I had a think about it and I don't think giving % back to the initial investor is a good idea. People will think they aren't getting enough back or some **** and it will all turn to crap.

A better plan might be to get people in on the particular part (in this case lets say a bonnet) and divide the price of the mold and the cast piece up into who ever wants to throw in. So if its $2000AUD to make a mold and each cast costs $1000AUD and 10 people want in thats $12000AUD all up, split between 10 people its $1200AUD each. Or something like that Then to save head *****, every piece after that is $1000.

We would need to get a list of the bits people want and go to these people and ask for prices. It seems the main one is a bonnet and then maybe stereo cluster and electric windows panel.

so each person needs aprox. $680.00 U.S. dollars

and you will be later selling them for $566.00 U.S. dollars?

that doesnt make sense.

I could see people doing it if they will save money,
but if they waited they could get the parts cheaper,
if i understand correctly,

now on the other hand if you have 5 people invest $1,360.00 dollars

which i would do

and say the product will be sold at $??? dollars
"sorry about the u.s. $"

and offer each of the investor 3 products in return
"three hoods in this case, two paid for and one freebie"

the deal would be that much sweeter.

see what im saying?

when i started my gauges for the daewoo i needed start up costs which was figured at $300.00

which i figured a little over for material

i had a decent demand for something that i didnt have the money to jump into,

so i offered two investors to split the costs "$150.00 each" and in return i would supply them with 6 custom sets of gauges "their choice"

the average msrp on these is $50.00
offering the investor a potential to make $300.00
double their initial investment
or a quick $210.00 @ $35.00 a set
which is still $60.00 profit

also to sweeten up the deal i promised not to push a single set for 2 months,
to ensure their profit

so you will not see any of my daewoo sets on the net till then

i make enough profit on these that although i was cutting into costs i could still afford to do what i did considering everything was free to me.

I really like the idea of a carbon fibre bonnet. When things are coming together I may be interested... depends on funds of course.

Later.

Peejay, could you give the specs for the coathangers?
I have some Jspec ones courtesy of JAL, They would give a real cool look. Do you think we should go in for a group buy of a roll of commercial catering foil as its tough and cheap?

Mmmm Carbon Fiber Body Tub...

Eh. I don't wanna warm the RX-7 up just to takeit outside to wash it and put it back in the garage... I know.. I'll just carry it outside.

So, just how strong is Carbon Fiber? Doesn't MazdaTrix sell a drive shaft made of it? What about temperature? Can a header be made of it? What about rotors? Rotor Housings?

C'mon guys. Lets build an RX-7 that someone can get under without a jack. Tell ya one thing though... Don't drive above 60 without one hell of an air dam.

Carbon fibre consruction is light for its strength. As an example on my 24ft yacht we dropped the hull weighgt from 425kg in fibreglass/foam to 155kg in carbonfibre/balsa. The 38 foot mast is around 15 lb bare.

Given a five million dollar budget then I could build a carbon fibre based RX-7, along with other weight savings by using titanium could get it down to under a 1000lb.

Remember carbon fibre is not a single substance but a whole spectrum of materials which can be woven or spun in many different ways according to budget and use. There are limitations in its use, my brother was involved in developing carbon fibre fan blades for 747 engines but after millions in research he went back to using titanium.

My conclusion is that for a simple shape, with the cost of the mold spread across many users, it may be worthwhile in a competion situation. If you just like the look then stick to fake decals and spend the money saved on engine mods.

here's simpler example. In my super street magazine, after they made a bonnet out of carpet fiber, they parked the car that they made it for on top of it. I wish I had a scanner.
