Question carb work second opinion

i had my shop do a check of my fuel delivery system yesterday just to see what was up (my filter was clogged after 1000mi). and they said that the float levels in the carb were a little low, one rotor is recieving more fuel than the other (which makes sense, since i run a little rough), and that i'd need to get it rebuilt eventually to fix these problems.

now, i trust these guys almost implicitly as they've done a lot of work for me in the past, and the mechanic who works on the mazdas owns a '84 GSL as his daily driver so he knows his ****.

they said a rebuild would prolly run me about $400.

my question is, does this sound right? i want to get as much input as i can on this matter, as $400 is a hefty sum to spend on a single repair.

thanks for input...

-brad

For $400 you could have Paul Yaw rebuild and modify your carb for more power, or pick up a performance carb (course you'd also need a new manifold in this case - another 3-4 hundred).

You could also do it yourself a lot cheaper; check mazdatrix for prices on a rebuild kit, I'm sure it's much less than that.

If all it needs a float level adjustment then I don't see why it should nee a full rebuild. Did they mention anything else? If it does need a rebuild and you don't wanna spend 400 bucks you should try rebuilding it youself. It's really not that hard as long as you take your time, don't lose any of the little bits and pieces(speaking from experience here!) and make sure you remember how everything goes back together. Also, when it's apart you should acid-dip the throttle plate, main body and air-horn to clean out all the internal passages. Let us know what you decide.

Jeeezus Christmas!!!
Send me the damn thing with a hundred bucks, and I'll rebuild it for ya!
$400 sounds like he knows his **** alright. Hell, the rebuild kit will only cost him about $15-$20, and he'll probably do it in two and a half hours...That's with a beer break!
...And he aint gonna acid dip that puppy, niether!

Acid dipped, ultrasonically cleaned, rebuilt and adjusted, complete with full on tune up, consisting of Fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter change, plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, and ignition timing adjustment. $150 from a buddy of mine, before I knew what the hell I was doing with a car. Same buddy told me never to accept a timing belt for it, even if Mother Teresa was offering it.

two more questions:

what would be a reasonable price to pay for a carb rebuild from a shop (where i'd get a warranty on parts and workmanship)?

what would be a good price to pay for an rx-7 carb off a junkyard car? there're two in my area.

If he is going to give you a warranty and you trust his work then $400.00 is not out of this world. You could try to rebuild it yourself and you would only be out the price of the rebuild kit if you screwed up.
I would pay the money if I knew that it would be a quality rebuild by someone I trust.

I got an old carb for an 85 for sale. I removed it thinking it was the problem. Ordered a used one from Mazdatrix, and installed it same problem as before. Actually what I had was an ideling problem, when the true problem was about 60-70 psi in the rear rotor. Eventually I got it to run ok for another 50,000 miles by setting it really rich. Finally the engine let go at 223k miles, but anyways its sitting here in a JL audio 12W6 box wrapped up, as it has been for about 2 years. Id take 125 for it plus shipping...If interested mikep28@bellsouth.net
