carb rebuild kit

Where is the best place to buy one for an 85 12a? My local Advance Auto told me they didn't have anything I would be interested in
Anyone ever done a step by step write up on rebuilding the stock Nikki? This will be my first attempt. I have searched but can't seem to locate a how-to. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I'm a realative novice with the same dilema. Through the research I've done over the past few months the only thing I can tell you is it's not as easy as other carb's and your better off to try the rebuild on a another carb you got from a junkyard or someone with an extra used one.

Other than that, ask Sterling for help, and read his write-up called "Carb-Crap...Nikki Mods". Good luck.

Oh yeah I got my kit from Car Quest.

Check Autozone, just make sure you have the carb # to get all the right parts. $20-$30 depending

Sounds like your Advance Auto guy isn't trying very hard. I bought mine there and they have this one listed on their web site. These carbs are pretty damn intimidating but if you take your time and make notes about how things go together it's not too bad. I used a digital camera to take pictures of everything and it made it a lot easier when I put it back together. There are a couple of check ***** and pins that will go flying when you open up the carb so make sure you know where they are located. Hope this helps.

Excelent idea. And make sure its the Haynes! My Chiltons is pretty much only useful for getting general info off wiring diagrams, 'cause it has ALL of Mazda's cars from '78 to '89 in the book, so you have to sift through miles of useless bullshit before realizing they didn't have the info you wanted in the first place.

Yep, its a real complicated beast of a carb, actually THE most complex one I've worked on. I did the same thing, used a digital camera and took notes. Take a picture from all angles close up BEFORE you remove anything. Take a picture for every step you perform, and make a note for every step too, including the settings for screws and whatnot. Use ziplock baggies and a permanent marker to label and store all of the parts as you remove them. When you boil out the carb in carb cleaning solution, don't mix up all the small bits.

I set up a card table with a plastic tablecloth in my garage for this project. Take your time, be methodical, and you'll do just fine. Also, besides doing the carb rebuild, this is the perfect opportunity, and highly advisable, to replace all the rubber hoses on the rats nest, including the air control valve hose at the rear underneith the carb, the one that always splits. Those are easy. Remove one at a time, cut a replacement hose to length, replace and repeat with the next hose. Test the shutter valve, or remove it, too.
