Carb q's...

My 79 is giving me fits! It won't run under 2k rpm and the pump is running out of a new gas can with new fuel and no filter. Anyway, I wanted to go back to basics and set the idle and mixture screws where they're supposed to be. I did a search and found a good picture of the idle screw and actually found it's location, (that's tough!!) Anyway, how in the world do you get a screwdriver on it??!! I worked for 2.5 hours, taking things off and getting htem out of the way, but with no success! I was so frustrated yesterday! Anyway, this is a stock motor so alot of stuff in my way.
Also, how difficult is it to remove and reinstall the carb on one of these? I'm thinking about having Sterling do a stock nikki rebuild. I just want something dependable. The carb looks nearly new as it is and I don't want to spend $$ on something that is not needed.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

I don't know what the problem is though. I just use a long scredriver. Sometimes I just use my fingers to get it all the way in. Take a picture at the screw your trying to mess with.

Here's a picture of the screw I'm trying to reach. I can not see it from the driver's side. Only from the passenger side behind the carb. I'm inserting my screwdriver in from the driver's side though...
There's a black arrow pointing to the idle screw and a blue hose surrounding the mixture screw. I can gett to the mixture screw, but I'm not ready to adjust it yet. There's a piece of linkage directly in the way of the idle screw on mine. It's as if "they" don't want me to adjust it!!

I usually just used an ultra long screwdriver. Have you adjusted the idle mix screw yet?

I think if you look between the accelerator pump, and the bracket holding the throttle cable, you may be able to get the screw that way.

I was planning on setting the idle screw at 2.25 turns out and then messing with the mixture. I think I tried every direction of reaching that screw. There's a piece of linkage that's for the secondaries that's totally in front of the idle screw. How long of a screwdriver are you all talking about. Mine is 9-10 inches long! It almost looks like I need to come up at an angle to get the screw, but there's just no room! Also there's a jam nut on the screw!!! AAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!!

For the record, your carb is a later style. Probably why it looks so new. Most likely someone got a newer one, rebuilt it, and put it in there.

There is such a thing as a flex shaft screw drivers. May try one of those and see if you can get in there.
