carb probs

Hey guys. I just took off my nikki and rebalaced it with the RB mainfold and an edlebrock carb. Its running well, but I am getting some weird surges and flat spots. Anyone know how to rejett one of these?
It accelerates OK when the primaries are opening, but after they are open about a third of the way, it bogs a little, until the secondaries (mechanical) start to open, then I get a surge of power to almost redline. It quits before redline, and as I let OFF the throttle, it starts to rev up to redline again. Weird stuff. Anyone have any ideas?

yea, sounds like you may need to jet up on the secondaries and increase your pump shot. what size is the carb?

i thought there was something you had to drill out to make a holley/edelbrock work correctly on a rotary?

nah, on holleys it helps to have the center hung floats/ bowls. pretty much just get a double pumper. edlebrocks can work right out of the box, just gotta rejet (bad for boost tho).

Hmm, are you sure that your fuel pump is able to handle the new carb? What I'm wondering is, do these carbs have separate float bowls for primary/secondary?

If one bowl feeds the primaries, and the other bowl feeds the secondaries, then maybe this is what's going on;

1. You start out good on the primaries until the bowl empties (fuel pump can't keep up, or clogged filter).
2. The secondaries kick in and you start feeding from that bowl, so you get good power again.
3. The bowl for the secondaries drains out and you have another loss of power.

I'm probably way off base, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case. Since it starts revving again when you let off on the throttle, it probably is a jetting issue. Good luck!

Alright Thanks for the help guys. I think that part of it is the fuel pump. Its a good aftermarket one, but I think it still need more fuel. And I'm sure I need to rejett it. But how can you really tell if you are rich in one part of the rpm band and lean in another? I'd like to put an A/F meter in it, But I'm not sure how. Is it as simple as buying the $20 A/F meter I saw at autozone, and installing a oxygen sensor in the header? I hope so, but I doubt its that easy. Anyone rejetted a carb before??
