Carb problem I think 84 GSL

Just got my first 7 and already am having problems, it seems to idle ok but taking off in first it has no power, then it will catch and work great, does the same thing in second gear, will lose power then be fine, again in third and fourth and fifth, not as much power loss in the higher gears. I added some carb cleaner and deicing fluid to get rid of the water in the gas if there was any. Oh just remembered it loses power going up hills. It doesn't backfire or anything just loses power. Any help would be great, my mechanic thinks it needs a carb kit, but he's not sure because he has never worked on one of these.
Thanks in advance
Gordie

There might not be anything wrong with it. If this is the first time you have driven a stock carbed 1st gen, they happen to be low torque at lower rpms and really don't have much to put out until about 4k rpm. From there to about 7k is when you get some ok power, again if it is just stock. When do you shift?

If you want to make sure you are not getting less than stock power you can always do the usual checks. Ignition, fuel supply, intake and exhaust.

My shifting is ok, I tried shifting at different RPMs and it made no difference. It really seems like it's starving for gas and then other times it seems like it's flooding. No black smoke though. How many jets are there, my mechanic seems to think that it is only pumping out of one. If there is more than one how would I clear the others?
Thanks

here is a link to the chapter of the manual that deals with the carb. Page 16 for specs, page 53 for carb removal, dissasembly, cleaning and reassembly.

Thanks, I'll have a peek, wished I knew more about these things.

Have a look down the carb and see if the accelerator pump is squirting when the throttle is opened.
