.. carb issue?

Well...

Im new here.. and i have a problem..

I recently bought an 83 rx7. At around 4500RPM in 3rd gear, the engine starts cutting out, as if it wasnt getting fuel. Im thinking the accelerator pump in my stock carb is bad, but i was wondering if any of you had any suggestions..

oh yeah, the car has a full aftermarket exhaust. not sure which brand..

If it's the stock carb, there is no pump in it. Carbs use airflow to pull fuel through. You may have a clogged secondary though because 4k-4.5k is usually where my secondaries kick in(not running mechanicals yet still on the vacuum ones) or the secondaries may not be functioning correctly or at all.

Define cutting out better though, does it sound like it's going to stall or does it just lose power another thing to check would be to see if it had problems in higher gears or if it will do it in neutral at higher rpms.

It could even be getting too much fuel causing it to stall out.

Im gunna go check it out more tommorow. I dont get to mess with it while its running much, on acount of my *only works sometimes* starter. combined with my *only holds 10 dollars* gas tank.

I know it doesnt do it in neutral, and in higher gears, so long as you dont accelerate hard, it does fine.

Start with a fresh fuel filter. The ap only works for priming the engine for start and when the pedal is pressed to help for a smoother transition during acelleration.

change the fule filter like trochoid said.. they tend to get very dirty and is the problem most the time also i would get the clear kind that can be seen into. it wouldint hurt to put 1 b4 the carby also... if the car sat a long time b4 you started driving it you may want to drop the take and clean it out good luck you will love the car when it runs

cheers PaTricK

Wrong. There is an accelerator pump.

Yes start with the filter. If the accelerator pump was bad is wouldnt accelerate well in any gear at any speed. That is the classic symptom. The carb may be using more fuel than its getting if the filter is clogged.
