Car won't turn off. anyone else had this problem?

working on a car this week and besides the many other problems it has, 80% of the time, it will NOT turn off. i took the ignition switch out yesterday and it just fell apart in my hands. apparently the little clips on the side of the white piece broke so it wont stay together, so i got a brand new one i had in storage and i put that on today thinking it would surely fix the problem, but it didnt do a thing. all the power to the car turns off but the car isnt stopping. i'm guessing the coils are not switching off and its possibly a short around where the coils are wired to the switched power. if anyone has any ideas on this or has had this problem before, please let me know what you think. thanks

well, kinda... it used to be a gsl-se. it has been converted to a 79 12a. this is most likely the reason for the electrical confusion.
