Car wont cut off with key
My 85 has been throwing me some curves here lately. But ive got most of them worked out. The main one is she wont cut off with the key. I've checked all the fuses and main engine relays. theyre all good. But listen to this. I can take the + battery cable off and the altenator wire off and the car still runs, lights still work, everything until i unplug my ignition box. I completly do not understand this. She's just got a mind of her own. Any ideas of whats going on in her mind??

Just a guess but I'm thinking that the alt is exciting itself and making it's own power with out battery assist . did you try unhooking the field plug ? I think it is back feeding through the dash cluster or somewhere that the wiring is maybe a bit pooched . and providing the ignition with enough power to run . does it back fire a bit with the key off ? Gerald m.
GB7 has a point My bike carries on a bit until the fan stops .if the fan is wired in separate from the rest on its own switch it could run on .

im not running an electric fan at the moment. and whenever i get through driving it, it does backfire a good hard shot haha. But how do you check if the altenator is exciting itself?

Just unplug the the 2 wire plug on the alternator it is probably getting power from somewhere else with out the ignition switch being on . Have you been doing any wiring in the engine bay maybe ?

i have one plug hooked up. i think the green colored one. but umm. the only wiring that i've done under the bay is hooking up the ignition box. nothing serious. hooked the leading ignitor wires up to it and ran the box wires to the coil then the plug wire to the distributor. Then i have jumper wires coming from the leading coil to the the trailing then its wire is to the trailing on the distributor. The big black/white wires. stock coil wires are not hooked up. but nothing else is different

unhook the wire on the back of the alternator and see if the engine turns off with the switch . if that don.t work you need better help than I can give . but I would bet that something you wired is causing the problem .. Once the alt is charging if the wiring is wrong it can support itself . it's very easy to screw up doing wiring believe me I know. . good luck ,,by the way which post on the alt is the wire hooked to ??
I posted this before I seen your last message Glad to hear its working.
