Car not starting

About 2 weeks ago my 83 GS started leaking fuel. Shortly after it stoped running, I changed out the fuel filter and it ran for about 5 minutes then it stoped again. I replaced the fuel tank(and it was just one of the return fuel lines that popped off) and it still has problems. I replaced the fuel filter again and still no go. Replaced rotor, cap, plugs and wires and checked to make sure it was getting a spark and it is. When I turn the key to the on position I can hear the fuel pump running(I think) but when I get under the car I can't see any fuel running through the filter. When I hear the humming I can feel the fuel filter vibrating. It turns over and it fires up for a split sec then it dies again. I have no idea what it could be.

Can any body help me with this???
thanks you....

go to the carb, or where ever the fuel inlet is, disconnect the hose, but not all the way. turn the fuelpump on and see if the gas is spirting or if its a stream. i had the same problem, i ran out of gas from the leak, and there was air in the lines. try that and i hope it works.

I took it the fuel filter off and nothing came out, so I guess no. Would the fuel pump be humming if it wasn't working?

You may have hooked up the fuel lines or pump backwards. To test the pump, take a length of fuel hose, clamp it on the 'in' side of the pump and drop the other end of the hose in a fuel can. If that works, then either the lines are wrong on the tank or the filter screens in the carb, the ones around the banjo bolts, are plugged.

Its hooked up the same way it was before I dropped the tank. I marked them, there was a little bit of gunk on the old tank could that off blocked up something somewhere else?

Test the pump. If that's working, then maybe the pickup line in the tank is plugged. How did the screen filter on the pickup inside the tank look?

I didn't check it. How would I go about checking that? But its having the same problem as the other tank, wouldn't it of ran with the new tank? Or could both of the tanks pick up filter be glogged?

Ok I've done some more research and talked to the previous owner. He had some slight problems with the fuel pump awhile ago. He thought it was the fuel pump but he changed out the filter and it fixed it. So I'm guessing that the car ran for a bit with a glogged filter and that was a lot of work on the pump and I then ran it for a bit with one of the return lines off (it came off somehow). So I'm guessing now the pump is gone bc its making a very loud humming now. When I drove it from mayland to georgia it was humming a little bit now its humming very loud and is making the filter vibrate a lot.

So what should I replace the pump with? A stock pump from mazdatrix for $98.00? Or is there a nice aftermarket one the flows a little better for a little bit more, since I'm sure I'll be upgrading some stuff here in a couple months/years. And where do I order it from?

Thanks for the help

A stock pump is the cheapest and easiest replacement at this time. Upgrading to an aftermarket pump will include replumbing the fuel lines, moving the cut/check vavle, adding an fpr and gauge. This could double the cost of a stock pump in parts alone.

If you know you will be upgrading carb, intake, and exhaust soon, then it can be worth the work and expense. Pump options are a Carter 75, Mallory 75 or a Holley red, then the fpr of your choice. Holley fpr if you want to run a non-return system, Mallory 4309 for a stock style return system.

I have a aftermarket high flow cat to a pacesetter muffler.Everything else is bone stock. Do I really need anything but a stock fuel pump?

Stock pump is fine until you upgrade the carb.
