Car idling like CRAP, no low end power

ok, i have an 85 GSL-SE

13b
Streetport
Weber Sidedraft
Racing Beat intake and header
2.5 exhaust all the way back

this thing idles like crap it feels like it has a miss, and has almost no power when you lightly press the gas, and under 2500 RPM... at WOT or over 3000 RPM it runs like a bat out of hell...

what could be the issue here...

it also sputters when cruising at a steady speed under 3000 RPM...

i put new plugs/wires in this weekend, seemed to help a little, but not 100% right yet...

ALSO

the problem started after i had the alternator rebuilt... it was overcharging, and now it's putting out the normal volts

could this have fried the coils???

Alternator overcharging probably fried the flux capacitors, which in turn will make the exhaust bearings fail, giving you those exact symptoms. Replace both.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Fuel filter should limit power at high rpm where there is a large demand for fuel, not at idle when it's using almost no fuel. With the weber there are 2 idle mixture screws(one for each barrel). Before you go changing jets start playing with those screws. What's probably happening is it's too rich or too lean at idle and is almost flooding the motor, or has just enough fuel to run, causing it to idle like **** and run bad until you're at high enough rpm for the idle jets to not matter as much. The idle jets are also used for steady crusing at mid/lower rpm, which would cause that stumble when cruising if the mixture is too lean or too rich.

3.5psi also seems low for a weber. Mine's a blowthrough weber, but when it's not on boost, it still has 6-7psi fuel pressure.

my weber book syas you shoudl ahve 2-3PSI for fuel pressure on a weber. They need high fuel volume not fuel pressure. But none the less mine seems to be happy at 4PSI, i get fuel starvation if I go any lower

And for the fuel filter... yeah it doesnt make any sence, why it would cause idleing problems, should be underload and all that. But the fuel filter fixed it, doesnt really make sence why.

Sounds to me like you have a problem with your leading ignition.... swap your leading and trailing coils?

Yep, throw a timing light on it and verify that you still have your leading ignition.....
