car fax
I was checking carfax on a old shell I have. it came back and said VIn numbers have 17 digits. I wrote down the vin from the firewall - SA22C-570160
Am I missing numbers that would be on the dash? Realy I am trying to find the year of this thing. Are all SA's 1980? or 79-80? or what.
Did they ever import in 78 or just manufac. in 78 as a 79?

Darn it i do not have my victoria british catalog with me. If you have one it tells you what year by the last 6 digits. But the vin numbers are 17 digits but they did nto introduce that until 80 i think so anything older has a short number.

The SA's don't have VIN's. They have manufacturer's serial no's. VIN's all consist of a 3 digit manufacturer identifier (JM1 for Mazda), then the car model and year info, and lastly the serial # of the car.
My VIN is JM1FB332XF0890471
Or in English, Mazda (JM1), 1st Gen RX-7 (FB33), GSL-SE (2), check digit for anti-counterfiting (X), 1985 (F), Manufactured @ Hiroshima Plant (0), Serial # 890471
1978 models were sold in North America as early 1979 models. SA's are the RX-7's produced between 1978 and 1980 (with the old body style). 81-85's are FB's.

I'd like to know wether the american/aus/japanese serial #'s contained in the # are international... meaning... My Jap Savanna has SA22C104953, so that means the Japanese #'s start with SA22C(1) not SA22C(5). Does that mean that there's an american car that has SA22C504953??
Using Bwaits # as an example, his s/n is SA22C-570160... does that make his car the 70,160th AMERICAN RX-7 ever made, or the 70,160th RX-7 ever made in the world??

And I have no idea if the Serials are international or not.
