Car dies after short while + tach is dead

I'm basically trying to figure out if the 2 problems are related. Just trying to get this kinda sorted out and trying not to spend too much money on it since it isn't even my car .

So after the whole Savannah escapade, I got the car to atleast fire today. It seemed fine, but then after probably a minute, it started sputtering and then died. I can restart it, but the longer I wait, the better it runs (or longer before sputtering and dying again). My initial guess would be fuel filter, but I'm just trying to narrow things down.

Also, the tach on the car quit a few minutes before the car died on the way back after we picked it up. I'm wondering if the 2 could be related. The tach makes me think the trailings are gone, but how would it run without trailings? Does the dying seem like a symptom of no trailings, or something unrelated?

Thanks guys

Replace the fuel filter because it's an easy 5 minute job - should be done every year. Other than the tach, what you describe sounds just like a clogged fuel filter.

Search about the tach/trailing ignition combo... it's a possibility given the tach dying, but I'm not sure it would cause those symptoms you're talking about, could be coincidence. Good luck!

Sounds to me like its a trailing IGNITOR on the distributer...

It will cut the tach, and the fuel pump if it goes bad...

Replace it, and the filter while your at it

Um, they are located on the distributer... I have spares I sell a cheap....

But, yeah, thats your problem... peace..

mine did the exact same thing a year or two ago ... the tach died then 10mins later the car would sputter and die under load, then eventually wouldnt fire up at all anymore .... and it was the ignitor in mine, and sounds very simmilar to your prob.

Cool. I didn't know the fuel pump would die without trailing, but it does make sense as far as how it dies. Thanks

Fuel filter needs to be replaced and probably spark plugs, but I'm sick of dumping money into a car that is not mine . He can have that stuff shipped to my place and I'll put them in.
