Can I remove the air pump permenatnly??
Well Im tearing into the 13b (fuel injected). in process of yanking out the engine.
The air pump states in BIG BOLD LETTERS "do not remove, do not oil"
well obiously im gonna take it off however does it really need to be reinstalled?? Im sure it is purely for pollution control,....isnt it?
anxiosly waiting your response.

If you have an emissions check in your state, you need it to pass the emissions test.
Although, you can install it to pass the test and remove it and the cat too, afterwards until you need it next year. My friend in NY does this.

I don't know about a 13B, but on 12A's it is very common for the main pulley to "squeal" (like a bad water pump) when you remove the air pump permanently. The solution, so I am informed, is to put a double pulley on the alternator. I will find out soon, because I have the problem and the pulley to fix it. The only thing is you need a "matched set" of belts. As in special order or special made locally.

To remove the air pump it is vital that you buy a dual belt pulley for the alternator. What happens is at higher RPMs the water pump no longer has that belt from the air pump to help turn it, so it slips. This can result in over-heating and as we all know thats a big no no on rotarys. The pulley you need is only like 35 bucks from Rotary performance wharehouse on RX7.com.
