If yu could go in w/ a blow torch & vaporize the interior you might hollow it out some. Replace w/ RB presilencer.

The grid is ceramic, a hammer/prybar would work better than a torch. If its clogged with carbon, its not far from melting down.In which case its probably toast.Dont install a new one until you correct to problem that coused the cat to go bad.No airpump, bad ACV,clogged air filter, rich mixture, weak ignition,ect.......
Ive run compressed air into non melted cats and back flushed a whole mess of **** (black, brown dust, carbon) out of them, but I cant say if it made any difference in the operation of the unit.Just screwing around while it was unbolted......BTW dont breath any of that stuff, its got all kinds of bad things in it.(platinum, palladium, rhodmium, carbon)

steve84GS TII you are right, about that and I think that I should just take my car to the emission specilist and have him test it and see why my car faild the emission test. From there once I have the list of things I need to do and what I need. I think I will then take it from there.

What you said makes perfect sense and I think I shouldn't turn my car anymore unless is to move it from the spot that is at and that is about it. What scare me is that the warning light for my exhaust it on and to warm the car takes 3mins before the choke drops. Now that you said about melting the cat scare me even more. =/

I bought mine from Rotary Perfomance - Rx-7.com for $235. They call it the Bönez Performance Converter System.

Pass the harsh smog test of california the past 3 times with out any issues. But if you do not have bi annual smog test buy or build your own straight pipe, removing the old cats.

If you remove the cats, you will need a block off plate for the air tube port coming off the back on the air intake manifold and remove your air pump belt/ACV, which will need a block off plate as well. Should get you about 15hp by running a straight pipe.

I run the Bonez also. They are made for a rotary's heat,so the casing is nice and small. If you buy a Random Tech or other universal cat,get a big core to handle the heat and HCs.SportCompact did this years ago with an 83.They ran RB headers and replaced the RB presilencer with the biggest RTech cat core they made.It passed easily(went from 1300PPM to 4PPM) and the cat's large surface area helps prevent meltdown.
MY Bonez has worked fine and gets my streetported TII past CA smog easily.Plus they sell them as blanks too,so you can use it in a custom application.
