Anyone willing to help out a fellow rotorhead?
Hey all...
I was trying to remove the old O2 sensor with the limited tools that I have... got nowhere and pretty much gave up, so I thought I'd bring it into a mechanic <sigh> and use their lift and tools. I hadn't been underneath my lifted car in about a year, and back then I didn't know that much about anything. I noticed all these things:
-Main cat gone (rattles like crazy)
-O2 sensor still won't come out... might need to get the manifold out and try something different.
-Front struts look awful.
-Passenger seat bottom plug gone.
-Fresh oil under oil pan (probably leaky gasket).
For now, my main worries are concerning the exhaust system. I need to pass emissions, so for now I'll just stay legal. (can't afford two for the 'emission test swap')
I don't have the tools, or the experience to do this all myself. I'm sure I could figure it out, but I'd prefer to use some help. The mechanics around here would charge me a ridiculous amount for this type of labor, and I'm no richie.
I was wondering if there's anyone in this forum who would be willing to work on the exhaust with me and kinda give me a tuturial along the way. I live in Nashville and will be willing to drive a few hours in any direction. At the least, I can provide food and beer , and a tremendous sense of gratitude.
I don't know yet if I should buy just the main cat, or the pre-cats as well. Might need to buy some pipe also.
So, anyone willing to help me out??

I edited your title so people in Nashville will see it. Along with the reply you get the free bump, no charge. ^ . You might wanna cross post this in the SE section as well. Would you like me to move it there and leave a redirect here?

no offense, but you do know that Tennessee doesn't require emissions right?
I would check with a muffler shop and see what they would charge. I live in East Tennessee (tri cities) but I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help. As far as I know, you would have to lift the engine in order to get the oil pan off. I'm not good with exhaust systems b/c all the bolts get brittle from the heat and I'm just good for rounding them off. I personally just ripped everything out and started from scratch. Spent $250. $100 for headers, $100 for muffler, and $50 at at the muffler shop (maybe less) to weld a straight pipe in between the two. That took care of exess weight, exhaust leaks, o2 sensors, and add power and sound to it. Yes, it is a little louder but not as bad as a Honda Ricer...

Oooohhh... I see why you thought otherwise... this is from www.tennessee.gov:
"Residents of Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties in Middle Tennessee and residents of Memphis in West Tennessee must have their vehicles pass an emissions inspection prior to registration or registration renewal. Inspection is not required for vehicles of model year 1974 and older in Middle Tennessee. However, an inspection is required for vehicles of all model years in Memphis."
So clearly, this wouldn't apply to you. Damn it, this sucks!

Man, that news to me! Sorry to hear that... Don't feel too bad though. There are is a lot of discussion on (my) area on emissions too. Turns out Knoxville is on the top 10 worst air-polluted cities in the country. Also, Gatlinburg (cherokee forest) is losing types of trees due to the pollution. So, I'm sure in a year or so we will have to pass emissions as well. Right now, none in Greene County though. So what if my car is already registered? Once the law changes, will I have to fix my car in order to renew?
Have you got a quote from the muffler shop? Maybe www.victoriabritish.com has some cheap cats for you.
