calipers.

My 84 SE's calipers are seized up--it's been garaged since 1995. What replacement calipers do you recommend? I've read on some of the posts about a 4-piston caliper or something like that. Will any caliper from any auto part store work?

Use a rebuild kit and repair them.

Have you or anyone that you know had success in rebuilding them? Sometimes the rebuilds are more of a burden than a blessing. Have you heard anything about those high performance calipers?

I have rebuilt them with the only problem being if the Ebrake O ring is no good, They will leak from there, If it is just the piston stuck then the rebuild works well.

there are no HP kits to replace the rear calipers.

Are the calipers different on the GS models compared to the GSL-SE models?? Also could you put a 2nd gen caliper on a 1st gen? Just wondering, thanks!

I re-built all four of my GSL-SE calipers before putting them on and had no problems at all. I have rebuilt quite a few on other cars though. But it is straight forward and the parts are like 10 bucks a caliper at the most. If you hone the cylinder/bore don't take hardly anything off or your screwed.

Yes, they're all different.

Actually, if I am not mistaken, the second gen 4 lug RX-7 front calipers are the same as the GSLSE ones.

Thanks guys/gals. I think I will take Hades12's advice and rebuild them. Cost is definitely a concern.

I dont think thats true. The hubs are the same but the FCs have bigger brakes if I remember correctly. Maybe the smaller FC brakes actually ARE the same as the SE, but I really don't think so...

Search for a FC big brake upgrade. You'll have to buy a special bracket from ReSpeed and get some used 2nd gen 4 piston brakes (calipers and rotors). Also, you're gonna need some big wheels if thats the way you want to go. I think 15" is the minimum, but I'm not sure.

SE rear calipers are definately different as they have to fit over vented rear rotors, but the front calipers I'm not so sure, I suspect they just fit to a different bracket to ensure they fit over the larger rotors. I will check mine but I think the front calipers are universal on 81-85.

I am open to be corrected on this though.

With much power and speed, much braking is required. Do you think the stock brake set-up is sufficient for a 200 hp 13B?

Oreilly's sells them, like $8 for each front, and $14 for each rear.

Not all calipers are the same on the second gens. Very true. Look at the part numbers from the Autozone.com website. They are the same. Now maybe caliper brackets might not, but the calipers are the same for the front as a GSLSE

This is from the Autozone website.
