Unhappy CA Smog

Alright, I've got a small story to tell, and then a question.

My '84 was originaly my Step-dad's, and he got the car smogged about a month before he gave it to me.
Well, my registration renewal notice came in, and I need to get it smogged again.

I figured if it passed the first time, it should pass now. I figured that until he told me some crucial (and sad) information. When he got it smogged, it failed HORRIBLY, but the guy did some carb tuning to get it to barely legal. He ran the test, gave him the certificate, and then put the car back the way it was so that it would actually idle. That means that the state the car is in right now is the horribly-failing condition. So I thought, well, I'll just get the tuning done and be finished with it. But then the last half of info was told to me. The guy who tuned my car said that I needed some valve replaced?
I asked my step-dad, and he said he forgot what it was called, and that it cost somewhere from $200-$350.
He said it was somewhere around the oil cooler.

What valve is this?
I wish I had more information on this, but he lost the documentation.
The fact that the valve isn't working right is why the car won't pass smog. Hope that helps a little.

if you need help passing ca smog let me know.... i know exactly what it takes to pass smog ... the legal way

the problem is the smog techs are famillar with the newer cars and dumb when it comes to the older cars!half the time the techs cant even figure out how to set the timing on the rotary, let alone figure out what all the solinoids and smog valves do!
remember, they want you to fail the smog test, thats how the state gets money!!! first you fail, then you pass, the more pollution they show a reduction in the more money they are funded!!

But didn't the car pass ?? i thought ? you said.. anyway,
can't place a valve neer the OC. And thats right about the tech's, the state, and the money. One BIG reason i've kept my 7's engine stock.

So 680RWHP12A how are we supposed to pass smog legally? I am a 79 RX7, and the all of the smog junk have been removed by the previous owner. What should I do?

The car has a header, and that's the best I know.

Re: CA Smog

Adam, find out what valve it is. Im assuming this is a S,GS or GSL with a 12A since you mentioned carb. If its the ACV (Air Control Valve) you can get them free. Most people in non emissions states remove that stuff. If that what you need and cant find one, PM me and Ill send you one....or 2.

Adam...Junkyard dude! You know where they are at...our junkyards would be an envy to many forum members.. cheap and abundant in parts!
Yes Cali.. an emissions passing car pretty much means STOCK or C.A.R.B. certified aftermarket parts.. or your homie hookups I've been having to go to the State Test Center Only places the last time and again soon... meaning visual and dyno type tests.
In 10 years my SE may become exempted

thanks for all the help; it seems to be the ACV.
I probably don't need a new one, they just want me to spend more money.

And thanks again for the bumper racer, it's been working out great.

If it's your ACV then she'll be running cool, producing alot of HC's and low Nitrogen. A failing ACV chokes off fresh air from the intake and doesnt transfer air to the cat to complete the burn process. You can bypass it by running the air pump around the ACV and directly into the cat. Then you leave the hose open that feeds the intake and she wiull get better fresh air. Solved my problem.

The valve you are asking about is called a shutter valve. It leans out the back rotor during low vacuume (reaching cruising speed, slowing down, letting your foot off of the gas etc. It looks like a dash pot. It closes a butterfly attached to the intake manifold underneath the rear barrels of the carb. They cost about $60.00

Hey roger, welcome to the forum
Well I guess an update.
It was the ACV, picked up a new one at a yard, slapped it in, and passed smog.

And roger, thanks for bumping a 10 month old thread

A side question... my 12a is still the original one from 1984... coming up at around 180k soon, how much longer can I expect out of this thing? I'm changing the oil every 2.5k and watching how I drive, I need this thing to last me through high school
