Yep, pretty much out of luck. The problem is with the pre-cats that Mazda uses. When you install a header, the pre-cat(s) are lost. This may be a problem for the visual. You can still pass the sniffer test with a header and a good main cat, though.

why not leave the stock stuff on and change out after the test..I know it's a pain in the *** ..but if you have your heart set on runnin a header then you "pay the price", so to speak..I'm lucky I fell into the category of exempt (20 years old exempt.. from e-test In Ontario,Canada)..I was thinkin though..is there a way to try to hide the header?..by using a heat shield(like the stock shield)..and talk to other people to try and find out how they do thier test at different facilities..i'm sure there are a couple places that are not like "control freak" and picky..and just glance real quick at stuff..or just take a look to see if it has a Catalytic..or just plain ask you..if you have one...wish I could tell you more..good luck though..nad as GSL-SE says:the cat is key..good cat/functioning cat/new cat....

when i got the car it had www.iscracing.net headers and exhust it has a cat on it. and its not all shiny like the RB headers. so i dont know if the headers will pass of not they look normal under the hood. if i got to i just grab some headers off a junk car at a salvage yard and go tfrom there.i think the cat thats on there now is trashed. so i was thinking about guttin it sense im registered in FL. and im in NC for the time being (Go Army

carb wasnt invented yet when these cars came out!
you have a couple options, some are legal, some are "legal"
1. buy 2 NEW cats, 2.5", get a good free flowing cat back, increase in diameter, plus unclogged cats should give you about 85-90% of the power, and be legal
2. run headers and 1 cat. still passes out the tailpipe, my smog guy didnt care, car passed with flying colors, etc etc this is "legal"
3. swap exhausts every 2 years, time hounored tradition, i used to know people who swapped engines every 2 years! this is "legal" too, at the time of the smog test the car is stock....

i was going to do the exhaust swap. it's easier than trying to pay off the smog guy and i definately don't want to fail smog and have the results sent in to the DMV. i have it registered non op but i only get 2 chances before i can't register it anymore...
