A/C: Dryer location, high/low ports, factory or dealer air
Hello all. I'm trying to fix the a/c on my '85 GSL-SE. First off, I assume being a GSL-SE it's factory air correct?
Alright, next, where is the dryer located? It's being converted to R-134a but I can't find the dryer to replace it. There is a spot on the passenger side in the engine bay near the firewall with a small block that looks like the top of a drier, but no drier is attached to it. Did the car originally not come with a dryer?
Lastly, I assume the high/low ports are the two on top of the compressor? But which one is which? They both look the same and obviously I don't want to mess this up.

Drier is located up front, driver's side, next to the condensor. The ports on the compressor should have an "S" and an "L". Suction and Liquid. Suction=Low side, Liquid=High side
Yes, if it's a GSL-SE it has factory air conditiong. A/C was an option on all 12a models. Mine was dealer installed. Most of the dealer installed kits were made by a company in Fort Wort TX. At the time is was called Lone Star Manufacturing Co. In the 90's Wynn's bought them out. In my experience, all the OEM stuff will work with it. You just have to specify dealer installed when ordering parts.
I converted my system to R134a, works great. I evacuated the system, pulled a vacuum. No pressure drop after 3 hours, so I added oil and r134a, at first the pressure was way too high on the high side. I don't know if there was blockage or something but it cooled awesome, but the pressure was nuts. I emptied a lb of 13a to even out the pressure, but it didn't cool as good. I gave up for the day, and weeks later I tried again. Topped off the system, and this time the pressure was good. Cooled awesome, 35 degrees from the vents. Lateley it's been near 100degrees and almost 100% humidity, my A/C has worked admirably.

Well, now I'm even MORE confused, I just went out and looked at the compressor, there's two markings, S and D. The line marked S runs over the engine bay and connects into the firewall. D runs under the compressor and goes straight into the condenser. I'm sorry for not knowing what the bloody hell I'm talking about, but this has got me seven different kinds of confused.
