butterfly and idle

won't idle worth a damn, took off the air filter housing and looked at the carb. butterfly doesn't move at all when stepping on accelerator, it's stuck wide open. how to correct this is my question, I assume this is why it is not idleing, no vacuum leaks, checked for that, runs fine when you get it out and stomp on the gas, low speeds, just dies.

Can you back the idle speed screw further out?
How is it that you can stomp the gas and it runs fine if the shaft isn't movin at all?

You aren't mistaking the choke for the throttle butterfly, are you?

Let me dig one up:

All I have is a '79 carb right now, but on the later carbs, there is one screw int he middle of the throttle body and another back towards the firewall. The one towards the firewall is the speed screw, I think.

The above picture is a 1980 or earlier. The idle mixture screw, which you don't mess with often at all, is on the left side, base of the carberator, and is likely covered with a silver cap (that you can't get off without pulling the carb). The 82 idle setting screw is hard to see--and when you see it it has a way of disappearing on you--it is very low at the back of the carb, and is accessed from the left side. It is under the accelerator pump. You need a long screwdriver. Put it just behind the fat tube coming from the air cleaner, and reach back in there while shining a light. It has an x head on it.

You can see the idle mixture screw--at the middle left of the picture, directly below the fuel return line and the shutoff solenoid can-like thing. The idle setting screw is farther toward the back of the car, on our right, following the tip of the screwdriver. It is below the accelerator pump, which has the lever in the back of it. Just below the pump you can see a brown smudge. That is the screw itself, and the screwdriver is sitting in its slot. See the thick hose from the air cleaner? Go behind (to the right) of it, and it points you toward it.

Here is a closer look at the accelerator pump area. The screw you want is beneath it, dead center and 1/4 the way from the bottom of the picture. Follow the grey shaft of the screwdriver until it ends. Good luck.
