burning rich?

ok first of all i'm not very experienced since this is my first car, i have an 85 rx7, 12a. I have a friend who helped me remove the rats nest, other than that i haven't done anything to the car. It's too rich and it idles funny, i believe it's because of a vacuum leak, i talked to him and he told me about having to take out the intake gasket and blocking off some kind of port? not sure what he meant by that. Also my car won't idle under 2500 rpm, i can bring it down but when i try to press the gas it would stall, other than that it runs great i have no problems with it except for the high idle and the strong exhaust smell...any tips as to how i could fix it, thanks.
