A universal will not work. The choke is actually a electrical/magnetic choke. Right behind the dash and integrated in to the choke, there is a box the holds the electrical/magnetic part. There is a sensor on the back of the water pump housing the heats up and releases the choke.

You could convert to manual I guess.

So I guess my only route is to try to find a factory replacement

That's correct. Post a want to buy ad here on the forum in the 1st gen classifieds section or search part out threads and see if anyone has one available. When I sell them, I usually sell them for $30 shipped, or $25 picked up.

If you pull apart the choke mechanism in the dash you will see the cable is bolted to a metal plate. You might be able to drill out the bolts to remove the old cable. Then you would have to thread in the new cable and find a way to secure it with very small set screws or tack weld it.

However, it's a lot easier to check eBay for a replacement. That's where I got mine, although I don't see any offered for sale right now.
