Unhappy Broken Axle...Or Something Like That...

Ok, well my Dad and I were driving around in the -SE when we started hearing an odd "cluncking noise" every now and then from the rear right side, and whenever we would go over bumps. We brushed it off as a blown shock as the suspension sucks anyway. Well, we stopped for gas, and I climbed under the car to take a look. Everything "looked" ok, so I proceded to start grabbing things to see if they were loose, starting with the shock. Everything seemed ok, except one part. Some kinda pivot type thing that has a rubber bushing on it that may or may not be part of the sway bar (I couldnt get far enough under to see exactly what it was). The pivot I grabbed was almost directly above the axle (I think), and is about 3" wide with a rubber bushing on it. It reminds me of what a leaf spring mount looks like. I have no idea what it is or whatever, but the car pulls to the right on acceleration now, so its almost like its part of the sway bar thats allowing the axle to twist under the car or something (left side moving in front of the right)...I dunno. Anyway, I just thought I would share my sucky problem, I guess its time to break out the welder . Oh, any tips on gas tank removal so I can weld this thing?

Sounds like one of the upper links came loose.

If the left upper link were disconnected, when you accelerate, the axle torquing over would cause the right side to go fore and the left side to go aft and the rearend would steer the car to the right.

I wouldn't drive it like that... the upper link's body mount isn't the strongest and you could possibly tear the right one free.

My bet is on the upper leading link (I think it's called the leading link). Both of the mounts should be on the front edge of your fenderwell. Mine both rusted through (the dreaded wheel well rust), so I replaced the brackets with some new, 16 guage ones... good as new. Anyways, check the bolts, check the bushing, then check the metal to see if it's rusted out... Good luck.

Jeff

P.S. If both sides are toast, the driveshaft somes up and smacks the bottom of the car whenever you go over bumps or drop the clutch... Just something to think about.

I havent personally seen any damage yet, but my Dad says that its "broken off" and that it could just be welded back on. Ive seen metal breaking before, but I have a feeling that it may have rusted through...And he is no longer driving it, hes driving the 85 GSL back up .
