brakes will have to wait, i've got smog problems

['85 GSL SE]

Well, I had planned to tackle the brakes next, but I failed smog today, so that will take precedence.

HC and CO are both more than double California's "gross polluter" status...

NOX is ok.

So I took it to a muffler guy that the smog guy recommended. He say's the rear CAT is definetly bad. The other two he won't know about until he gets the rear one off.
His concern (and mine) is that if I just have the rear CAT replaced and the front two are also bad, will it blow crap into the new one and wreck it?
His prices seem very good compared to MazdaTrix, the rear is $225 and the front two are $170 each. Obviously aftermarket stuff, not OE. Should I be worried about the quality?
Compared to $1500, $600, and $350 from MaxdaTrix, it seems like a great deal. I am tempted to just have them all done even if the front two appear ok.

What do you think?

Besides the Cats, what else should I look for? I have replaces the plugs, changed the oil, and cleaned the injectors. Is there a way to test the air pump?

Thanks every one,
Ben

Damn that's a lot of money. Here in NY we don't have to pass smog at most shops. If it's not backfiring or popping on deacceleration then the airpump should be ok.

I just passed smog and the only thing I changed to do it was the main cat. I think the aftermarket ones would be fine, because your OEM ones are quite probably shot.

Mine sure was after 20 years! :P

Went through the same thing here in washington about 2.5 years ago (October tabs).

When I pulled the main cat, all the pellets were gone.

I replaced it with a Maremont direct fit from Shucks (about $120 I think)

Its a 3 way honeycomb cat rather than the 2 way pellet bed one original to the car.

I've had no problems passing with that one on my system. And no problems with burn through after 2.5 years and about 30K miles.

The front one (there is are two on my 82) is hollowed out so only the main cat actually does anything.

You might just try picking one up from Shucks (check Http://www.partsamerica.com for prices( listed at 115 part number 28955) and see if that will get you past emmisions.

It should only take a few minutes to put it one, you will also want to get the air injection hose (part number 26501) because the new converter does not have a flange on the air port.

I also adjusted my mixture last sunday and here are the numbers I'm getting at idle.

CO - 0.00%
CO2 - 13.5%
HC - 25 PPM
O2 - 11.1%

At 2500 RPM was a bit higher in areas

CO - 0.01%
HC - 79 PPM and raising to 150 on Deceleration but then dropping back down to 25 PPM after about 10 seconds.

You may want to consider to get a Bonez high flow cat to replace all the stock cats. ( it is a direct bolt on between your exhaust manifold and the muffler, it even has a provision for your 6th port acuactors) It should get you to pass CA smog and at the same time boost HP! Take a look at www.rx7.com.
