For all the work you need to go thru to install, buy a "new" (actually, I believe rebuilt) one off ebay. Listed all the time for $30-50. Not worth the grief to install an old one likely to fail!!

it may be a good idea to replace the master cylinder, however, you may want to look into inspecting the other brake components before you go and assume that only one part is bad.

you might want to check and make sure that your caliper pistons aren't seized up and if you have drums on the rear that the wheel cylinder pistons aren't frozen up. i just recently put a new master cylinder on my 83 and got it from an Autozone for around $35 brand new.

Is the pedal soft? If you hold it down lightly, does it slowly sink to the floor (indication of bad MC)?

well the pedal when i push it has a little pressure and goes to the floor not slowly but pretty quickly, the pistons i was able to push back and forth with a ratchet when i compressed them back in when i put the pads on, and the caliper moved slightly when the pedal was applied, another thing is the master cylinder is like a giant rust ball, basically what leads me to think its bad but thanks again

unless there is a loss of brake fluid, it hasta be the master brake cylinder. Now is a good time to put liquid wrench on the those rusted nuts, and order the master cylinder from someone like Autozone so you can do this project sat and sunday.

To do things perfect, replace the rear slave cylinders too.........nahhh!
