brake lines

Hey guys,

I just found out my ebrake light was on cause i had no brake fluid, so my rear brake lines to the drums are rusted through and leakey, I'm planning on replacing them, especially the driver drum to passanger drum lines(pretty bad) Does anyone know what length of brake line i should get, and what fittings i'm going to need. I would like to buy this stuff before i get in there, I have an 83, if it makes a difference.

Why not use this as an opportunity to install SS lines?

are you talking about the ss braided lines that replace the old rubber ones, to give a better feel?

Cause i'm wondering about the actual lines that run underneth the car to the rear drums, and if i can buy these lines in ss, i will but what fittings will i need to hook them up to the master cylinder and to connect them to the rear drums?

I laid new hard-line on my axle. The lengths were just stock lengths that my foreign auto parts store had. It was kinda tricky becuase the lines had a lot of bends in 'em. I kinked, and subsequently destroyed, two lines before I got the hang of bending lines.

As far as under the car, hmmmm, not sure. You may hafta get straight hardline and flare the ends yourself. Maybe someone else has experience with this. Good luck!

Yeah brake "hoses" and brake "lines" are two different things.

Manntis, you probably already know this, but for those who don't:

In the rear of cars with drum brakes, there are *only* the solid metal lines. These meet with a short length of hose near the rear axel, which meets to a second metal line that goes to the front.

If you buy SS *hoses* you replace the rubber hose that connects the metal lines in the back with the metal line to the front, and you also get the SS hoses that attach the metal up front to the calipers.

To get new metal *lines* is a different story.... I haven't replaced mine, and I don't really know where to get them. Mazdatrix doesn't sell 'em, neither does VB or Racing Beat... I guess it's either Mazda Dealership, or butchering in the generic lengths of metal line they sell at the local parts store..

The Victoria British Catalogue gives a great diagram of what the lines and hoses look like, but they only sell hoses.

The line that runs to the rear drums, I think its 3/16 or maybe 1/4, anyone know at all.

oh another thing, Is it possiable to replace the front calaper hose with a thick steel line, and i can just custom fit it to fit, I would think that this would give the better feel that ss braided lines provide, but cost me close to nothing.
