brake caliper paint question

is it really necessary to use brake caliper paint to paint brake calipers? or would regular spray paint work?

I've used brush on tremcald rust paint for years with no issue. You have to get them really clean though. Caliper paint does have higher heat tolerances though.

FWIW, the "Duplicolor" brand ceramic caliper paint in a kit seems to work very well (Autozone, et al.). Retains color better than typical spray paints, easy to clean dust and debris off. However, although it is heat resistant, it chips very easily. And you have to put multiple thin coats on rather than a single thick one (use a sponge brush). It's very forgiving as it tends to self-level. I preped with a scrub of Simple Green or other eco-friendly cleaner followed by lacquer thinner. Tape what you don't want painted and go to it. Let cure over night and reassimble; touch-up nicks. The kit has done two full caliper sets and there is still lots left.

Any high heat paint or ceramic paint should work. However, brake fluid eats paint so be careful when bleeding. Use a rubber hose and a container to catch the brake fluid.
