Bought a Triplet of SA RX-7s!

Good Afternoon All from Japan!

With the outbreak here, I have been extremely busy with work. As such, I can find myself browsing the internet and the FB Marketplace. Guess I should be considered lucky as I have now found myself back in the rotary game and bought these three!

I bought these from a known collector/etc. who had bought them from a storage auction as the previous owner abandoned them, as well as two RX-5s and an RX-4. It seems the later three didn't sell, but these did. Unfortunately, with the outbreak, he had to sell these. I purchased them and arranged to rent the lot they are in until I return home (cars are about a 30 min drive from my stateside apartmen).

It appears two are 79s and the other a 1980. Their engines have been stripped and removed, and two have been partialled parted. Thankfully, they are titled.

As can be seen, they are in rough shape, but I was originally only going to buy one as I didn't want to worry about rental spaces till I got home. However, two are in the same space, so it works out well!

The car that I will be working on is the silver, with no sunroof. It is originally the one I wanted (I have a bad distaste for sunroofs, haha!) And is the most complete. As seen, and according to him, other from the rust in the normal area of the rear and the lower rear quarters, the body, floors, etc. Are all intact. Interior is mostly complete as well.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get home until November, so they still sit in the lot until I can move the one indoors. From there, I will stabilize the rust and do a little work before coming back to Japan. If anyone needs any parts from the other two, I will definitely let them know. I want to evaluate the bodies to see if they can be somewhat salvaged or if someone wants then whole. If not, I may part them myself and use them as a source for sheet metal if applicable.

Thanks for looking! More photos below!

It's the epoxy points for the reinforcement structure under the hood, common place for the SAs to rust.

Wonder if these were part of Dave's collection at some point...

You mean Rotarydude. There's a name I haven't saw in awhile. I know he broke up and sold off a bunch of stuff. He put a lot of S/N's in the stickey registry thread. Would just be a matter of bouncing the car VIN's off that list to see if they once belonged to him.

Unfortunately, the RX5s and the RX4 are not mine. I've been meaning to call the storage office to see if they are still there (according to the seller of the RX7s, the others were not sold at the storage auction). Time difference from here and the states is a headache, at times! If they are, I may suck up my wife hitting me when I get back and get those as well to prevent them from being sent to the junkyard.

I am now hoping to get back in November to see my family, and to see the cars. And judge whether the other two RX7s that are partly scrapped can be saved. If so, I will sell those in full, but if not, I will part them out prior to scrapping the bodies for those who need parts. May keep one parts car though! The steel on one looks excellent in the areas I'll need it on the good one. From there, it is either a temp cover with plenty of silicone packets, or into an internal storage space for that one to avoid any further rust deterioration. It isn't that to begin with, but would hate to see cancer spread.

Those earlier RXs do seem to rust like hell! And thank you for the info on the reasons for the hood! At first glance, they do look like someone hit them with a shotgun or some target practice, haha! But I've seen it before on other RX7s and wondered why it rust in those locations specifically! Just like the rear of the 7 just under the hatch! Thanks again!

You mean the waffle rims like in my avatar? You should post a want to buy in the classifieds, I'm sure someone has a set to sell cheap.

Yeah people are always selling those. If you have the money this company refurbishes and sells all the styles of RX7 factory rims, including waffles, Limited Editions, snowflakes and the rotor design rims......

That is awesome man, congrats on the score! They both obviously need a ton of work, but glad to see them wind up back in the community instead of going to scrap. Would be cool to snag the RX-4 and RX-5 too, just to do save them as well.

Interested to see what you do with them!

That black car is / was a 79 Limited I believe. It had the modified waffel wheel design. Borrowing Stu's wheel pic, I think he is looking for the wheel on the far left.

The black car is a 79 Limited and the gold car is a Solar Gold Leather Sport...which is a 1 of 500 car.... it pains me to see it like that. I have a Solar Gold LS snd if it were possible or even feasible, I would love to buy that one from you. Here is my car and it's what that car looked like at one point in its life:

Good afternoon guys and gals!
I appreciate the comments thus far. As stated, if they are truly too far gone, I would scrap them, however, I do not like doing that to any car that can have new life breathed into them.

These indeed belonged to Rotary Dave, and speaking to some members of the FB forums, I found the sad story. One of whom had an R100 held by him, only to be sold at the auction. After doing a little research, everything was confirmed by a 2016 newspaper article stating all the vins that were to be sold at the auction.

I had my hunch of the 79 LE, as I had a project one up in NC a few years back. However, I never even knew about the 80 SG LS, which is pretty neat!

I'm still in Japan and won't be able to do anything until November when I can go on leave, unfortunately. With this new information put into light, I'd rather have myself and a couple other members here save them if they can. Stay tuned!

Sorry to bump up an old post, but update.

I had listed this for sale, due to lack if time, family, matters, other car, etc. If someone is interested in these bodies, let me know. If someone would like these bodies for free, and can transport them off my rental unit property, they are yours. Sorry to those that messaged me. Too many life issues in a way, and would like to just get them out of the way and save money from the storage unit. Thank you so much.

Hopefully these can be saved. If I were closer I would grab the Solar Gold LS for my son and I to restore.

@prelude106 I'm also in Knoxville and depending on your goals with the car(s) I may be interested in parts off the car if you end up getting one or more.
