I have spoken to some experts on mechanical fuel injection, and they all agree that mechanical fuel injection would be extremely hard and not worth the time/money to set up on a rotary. The problem is due to the inherent overlap of a rotary. They do not respond well to overlap. It is also very difficult to tune the mechanical fuel injection.

All of this information pertains to SPICA injection as well as CRS? (the type that comes on VW's) injection. I do not know about the bosch injection.

I agree with the overlap part,Mechanical injection doesnt respond to overlap well at all.

the tuning on the otherhand,is really easy. My daily driver has Mechanical Injection (2.0 16v Jetta)

It is really easy to tune, seeing that the mixture screw affects the mixture throughout the rpm range, and not just on idle. Why ?
The screw that adjusts the mixture, fisically adjusts the ratio between the arm,and the fuel metering disc. The quantity of fuel is controlled by the amount that the disc underneath the fuel distribution head moves. Therefore,if you make it richer @ idle,it will be richer up top as well.
