Bonez Race pipe

Damn its irritating when you type up a long post and when you submit it you get an error causing you to lose everything you wrote.

Anyway 3rd times a charm. I'm in the process of installing the Bonez race pipe on my 83 GS. Yada yada, I've run into a problem. When bolting up the race pipe to the bent pipe (blue) the rear end of the race pipe butts up against the bottom of the car before the bolts are even tight. This doesn't seem right. Additionally the next section of pipe, that has the arms for the o-ring hangers wont fit that high up under the car because the hangers hit the surrounding floor. Looking at the pre-silencer that i removed it looks like it has a slight downward bend which would provide the necessary distance between the cat and the floor.

Has anyone encountered this problem?

The race pipe is straight with squared off flanges, should it have a slight bend or angled flange?

Could it be possible that my bent pipe and pre-silencer became warped over time?

What options do I have, would a RB header replace the manifold / blue pipe and then bolt to the Bonez pipe?

Thanks

I don't know if the Bonez pipe was even designed for a 1st gen. When I think Bonez, I don't think FB. I think FC or FD. Anyone else?

Some are made to fit the fb. I have one on my 84 gsl.

I can't help with the problem of the op. Sorry. Although, to the op, my pipe replaces everything from the manifold to the end of the final cat. It sounds like you are trying to bolt it to the downpipe (blue pipe). Do you have a short race pipe? Or the long one that's over 3' long like I have.

I think RX7.com sells them for FB. Each series has different pipe specifications so its possible you could be trying a s2 on a s3 etc. Your best bet is to cut and clamp it temporarily to shape and take it to a muffler shop for welding.

Not quite the responses I was looking for. According to their website the 81-83 is shorter and only replaces the pre silencer and the cat. The 84-85 is a foot longer and has a bend to attach to the manifold. Not quite sure whats different in the stock system. But Ted, you have an S3 so yours would be longer. And NCross, I have an 83 which is an S2 so in theory this shorter pipe should bolt right up.

Does anyone with an S2 have this pipe?

Have you tried calling ari from rx7.com?

the S2 has a longer exhaust manifold outlet than the S3 does, so if you have an S2 pipe on an S3 manifold, it would hit the floor.

except that difference the manifolds are basically the same.

the S3 flows can flow more, as the outlet is too small, and the S3 is just shorter, so you can go to a bigger pipe sooner.

I did. He's informed me that the race pipe should indeed be a straight section with no angle in the flanges. He believes that something isn't right with my exhaust, that it was bent/damaged at some point, possibly from bottoming out on something. This means that both my curved section of pipe and my pre silencer are deformed and I wont be able to use the bonez pipe.

Unfortunately i had to cut the connection of my bent pipe to pre silencer connection since the bolts were rusted/welded solid. So I either have to drill out those bolt holes to re-install , invest in a header and silencer, or build a custom pipe to replace the cats. And I was really hoping for something cheap and simple...

I have an 81 that I installed the pipe on. No issues. It sounds as if he's right and your exhaust got bent. I've seen the blue pipe bent in so many rx's. Try unbolting the blue pipe from header, then hook the bonez up to the rear section of the exhaust. The hold blue pipe up to header to check.

I have the pipe installed right now and it bolts right in where my silencers were at.

Just make sure nothing is wrong with your stock setup if thats what you have now.
