Hi and welcome. Where in Michigan? There are some very smart 1st gen owners up there. Unless its really bad, I say fix it. Mostly, the common places for the rust are the rear fender wells, and around the rear hatch.

That car doesnt look bad at all. ( I know its not yours). Do a search. Theres pice of other peoples repairs floating around. As bad as your pics are, it looks like surface rust to me.

I had an estimate made to repair all bodywork on my car, 3000$ CAN. I say mine is worth it, and I know yours is not as bad as mine for sure. Only reasons I accepted the estimate is because 1)it's an original SE and 2) there are virtually no FBs in good condition around here. Bodywork begins in spring by the way...

If you intend to keep the car for some time (a couple of years), then go for it. If you're going to sell it next year then forget it because you will never get back your money when you sell it. Also make sure they do a good job when fixing it.

damn i hate rust...so much so that i traded my really nice looking black 7 for just a nice looking (rust free!) white one...

there was LOTS of rust on the black one and the further i tossed around the idea of repairing the more i was discouraged in getting it fixed.

my solution? well...i searched for a chassis as far south as i can go in 1 day and luckily found it. i ended up taking the entire car engine and all...with a couple things to change on her it all worked out...

here are 2 posts of my rust issues i had...

and heres the post of when i did the swap in NC...

good luck!

I think I can kinda see it Is it rusted through?
If you don't want to get rid of it I would fix it. Being the frame you don't really have to worry about how the repait looks just how strong it is. It's really hard to tell without seeing it though. I think that it shouldn't be too ahrd though if you have access to a welder and don't care how it looks.
