blinkers

I posted a Thread about my gages and asked about the blinkers. My blinkers only work sometimes. I was told by the person that i bought the car from to play with a plug that was pluged into a black box next to the clutch petal so i did that and I can sometimes get it to work but today i unplugged it and looked at the plugs and it looked ok so i am wondering if the box is going out and what is it? I have a repair manual coming in the mail soon but i need the blinkers working sooner.

Thanks

You don't say where year you have, so I'll reference the 1985 manual. First, download the service manual for here http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php. Then go to page 15-28 and start the troubleshooting process. You will need to know how to read a schematic and trace wires.

Oh sorry its a 85. I cant work on the motor and everything else but when it comes to electrical i am not the best. I have checked all the fuses that are under the dash on the driver side. I tired taking the black out but could not quite figure it out. I am still waiting for the damn repair manual i got off ebay.

Download the service manual for free. It is the factory one with all the schematics.

Yeah I did from the link you gave me. Now i just have to find or get a volt meter to test it. But I think its the box it plugs into because i can sometimes get them to work. And now i am finding out that finding this box is going to be impossible..... fun

see if any of the contacts are loose in the connector, as in they may not be touching the relay pins. Though if it blinks fast, that's usually an indication of a short circuit, think the RX is wired this way - so it may be the wiring to the lights that is shorting out. If it changes when you move wires, keep moving things and see if you can track where the problem is that way.

I checked the contacts and they are ok. It wasnt blinking at all. I also tested the wires with a volt meter and with the key on and the blinker on i got volts. I tested what the link that KansasCityREPU told me to look at. So my guess is that black box the plug goes it is where my problem is at. I think i read somewhere that its the cpu... tell me if i am wrong..

I would look at the flasher unit. There cheap to replace.

Flasher unit is part of the black box, which is the CPU. Most likely the solder joints on the circuit board, where the connectors are, have cracked. That's what happens most of the time. What about your hazards? If they don't work as well, it's almost guaranteed you have a problem inside the black box. Pull the box out and check. If you know how to solder or know someone who does, it's an easy fix to just resolder the connectors. Do a search, there's a lot of flasher unit info in the forum. The trickiest part is getting the box out. It's held in place by 3 10mm bolts, and they're tough to get to.

Yeah I have no hazards as well. Headlights and tail lights work fine... Just no turn signals or hazards at all. I figured it was the CPU which luckily my brother-in-law is a rx-7 genus (i bought the car fro him) sent me a cpu and a clutch soft tube ( because that just went out) but if you have any pointers on how to remove the cpu that would help me a lot. I looked in the Haynes manual and I see nothing on how to remove it..... Any pointer would be nice. Thanks!

Pull the driver seat all the way back, get a head mounted flashlight, limber up and snake in under the dash over the seat, facing up, so that your head is between the clutch pedal and the wall. Have a couple of different length 10mm sockets and a 10mm wrench in your hand. Once you're down there, you'll kind of see what needs to be removed first, and which connectors should be disconnected. Might help to remove the fuse box as well, if it's in the way. Curse a lot to relieve frustration. Good luck.

BTW, putting it back in is going to be just as awful.

Did you try the troubleshooting procedure in 85RX7(15)Body_Electrical.pdf file page 15-32?

Yeah I did do that that page says to do about testing it for power. The plug itself has power when i turn the turn signal on. So I dont think its the plug or wiring. Thats why I was leaning more towards the CPU
