Blew my 83' 12a (pics)

Several weeks ago I blew a couple apex seals on the front rotor of my 83' GSL's stock 12a. I am finally getting around to telling you all the story.

I drove out to mazdatrix to get some suspension parts. I picked up a whole bunch of stuff, boy was i excited. Just after leaving mazdatrix, about two blocks away, I started off in first gear from a red light at probably about 50% throttle and got to about 5000 rpm then.......Bang! the car loses power and falls on it's face. Then is starts to vibrate like hell and feels like I lost like 60% of normal power. So I limp back to mazdatirx so they can check it out. Sure enough I blew something out. They were cool and let me return all the suspension stuff I just bought and then I limped home on the freeway about 15 miles. It actually did okay when you got up to speed, looking back it was pretty funny.

That same night I pulled the engine, and then took it to mazdatrix the next day. I'm going for a rebuild (level "C"), a street port, and a streetport RB Holley carb setup.

I've already begun a long list of things to do and new parts to buy, I be sure to pass on my experiences along the way.

Check out this picture of one of the front rotor's apex seals:

Yeah, both rotor housings were pretty screwed up too. I didnt take those home though. It's pretty much going to be a "new" engine.

it might be worth it to take the time to convert to the air-style oil cooler

Damn! I did, until I forked over some major cash to get mine rebuilt. Oh well. Thanks anyways.

Very good suggestion, I did that about 2000 miles before I blew the engine. Come to think about it, I should have that cooler checked. It is rather old looking. How the hell do I check the damn thing. I'm planing on installing oil pressure and temp gauges before I put the new engine in, is that enough?

Thanks

got one of my rotor housings back. Check out the pics.

It looks like I'm gonna be able to take some pictures of my new engine being built / ported next week. I'll post them too.
