Could be a spool. I think my 79 is open but both wheels spin on it. Seems like the turbo fc's first had any from of positive traction

Any LSD from a GSL or GSL-SE can be refitted back to any axle. It is an unbelievably easy swap to make, so there's no reason to think you don't have one.

Would you take the internals out of the gsl housing and put them in yours, or swap the whole axle?

A spool is a true posi, Both axles go into a solid "spool" so there is no give. If you have a spool you should feel some wheel hop on tight corners, due to the difference in travel distance between the two tires (the inside travels far less than the outside). Typical posi still has clutches in it, but they are pretty tight, just enough to give on cornering. My '83 gsl will lay an equal patch from both tires, but I don't think it's spooled.
