Big Mishap With Dist! NEED HELP!!!

First off let me say, *&#&^$* #I&@ *(^#*@( **&#!!!!!!

With that said. Let me describe the situation at hand.

I finally finished taking the rats nest off, and everything is plugged and done. And I must say its a beautiful sight, and a well done job.

Anyway, after the vaccuum leaks were plugged I decided to set the timing. Get out my 10mm socket. I go to loosen the adjusting nut on the dist. Give it a little twist and *POP*. The *&@$ 10mm bolt twisted in half. So now my dist. is free swiveling and I have no way to get the other half of the bolt out of the block. I've got to get it out of there so I can put another bolt in and re-time it.

Can I drill out the stuck bolt and then re-tap the hole? Or is there some way I can get the old one out.

From what I've seen the previous owner made another attempt at performance by advancing the timing, and like everything else they did a crappy job. They advanced it wayyy to much. So basically I'm stuck until I get that bolt out of there and find a new way to keep the dist from advancing or retarding itself.

Anyone else ever had this happen? WHAT DO I DO????

yeah, you can always drill it out and retap. or just try to drill it out a bit and use an easy-out. those work sometimes( i think i've only have one that actually worked). or you can drill through it with a bit just a little smaller that the actual bolt and get a screw driver or allan wrench in there and try to twist it out. good luck

If you drill out the hole to big then you can get a helicoil at your local autoparts store. Get the helicoil first so you know the right drill size to use then tap the hole with the proper helicoil tap which sometimes comes with the helicoil. The just twist in the helicoil and you'll have even better threads than before.

HA, I've had that happen to me before too! Yeap, I used a "easy-out" and it LUCKILY came out then. Sucks to have that happen, I feel your pain!

I"ve been oiling the crap out of it, and when I get a chance again I'm gonna try to take her out again. If worst comes to worst I think I'll have to re-tap it.

SOMEDAY I might get the timing set correctly... :-D

The Helicoil option is the best! not only doies it fix the damaged thread, but it makes it stronger!

Get the right size Helicoil kit, drill out the bolt using that drill, you will find the thread remains will just fall out, then re-tap with the helicoil tap, (should come with it) install the helicoil and your done!
