I've been a big fan of alarms with pain-inducers. 10kv to the body of the vehicle on alarm activation has always sounded like fun to me. a 130+DB buzzer inside the car would be cool, too. Self powered, with a battery under the dash or underneath the storage bins or something. Most thiefs (around here, anyways) want your stereo, not your car. And getting a bigass shock every time you touch the car would certainly be a good deterrent.

As far as anti vehicle theft goes, kill switches are fantastic. NOT LEAVING YOUR KEYS IN IT and NOT LEAVING A SPARE KEY ON IT (unless its VERY well hidden, ontop of the rear axle or something like that, I dunno) will help matters amazingly. These are all nearly 20 years old now, and the oldest ones are 25+. They're pretty damn easy to get into, so the challenge is making them unreasonably hard to steal, after the break-in. Any good modern alarm with pager, glassbreak, etc will work wonders, I feel.

I have a custom limited edition, winter anti-theft Dellorto. Guarenteed 5 min delay when started cold. Won't idle at traffic lights, won't start unless hood is opened to manually activate the choke (not currently connected).
Bonus feature: will sputter and die at least once before starting up!

For the battery cut switches, How do you keep your radio memory and clock settings?

I will draw a diagram for an automatic-off fuel pump/ignition kill switch for y'all when I get on later tonight... It will automatically go into kill mode when you turn the key off. You will need to press a button to activate the fuel pump/ignition when you turn the car back on...

I have no problems securing a vehicle from being started and driven off... Unless I leave it for a couple days and the theif has a lot of time to figure my **** out and some spare parts...

My worry is tow trucks... How to make your car un-towable... as that only takes a few seconds...

Jack it up, put wheels on dollies, pull on to flat bed... No opening the car to take out of gear, drop e-brake, or straighten steering...

This defeats shaved door handles with electrical actuators, removable steering wheel. (Although before removing the steering wheel, I'd crank the wheels all the way to the left or right so that the car would hit something if it were moved... Preferably another car...)There is so much you can do with a car that will go straight.

Need some kinda boot or something...

what about those big wheel locks... you know the simpons episode where they put it on homers car and he drives away anyway. Hes drving through the ghetto and its ripping his fenders apart. man.. i love that show.

I think a cool idea would be to have two main coil wires Leading and Trailing that have no center core in them and put them on when you want to assure it won't start. It would look like everything is fine, but obvously it isn't and will frustrate the thief and move on.

But then if your stock stereo is still wired in, or you used the stock stereo power wires, you'll lose your memory, as well as the clock in the dash board...

Really, if a car theif WANTS your 20+ year old car THAT bad (he'd have to be a moron IMO), he could steal it anyways. No method of theft prevention out there could stop him.

Personally, I think you need to stop worrying so much, buy a cheap car alarm (better than nothing, especially if you work like I do at a pizza place, where you can hear it go off from inside), put a club on the steering wheel, or maybe one of those things they had on TV that locks your clutch pedal to the bottom of your steering wheel, and quit worrying

There's lots of nice cars out there without theft prevention systems.

Put it in this perspective:

You're a car theif, walking through a parking lot, searching out a car to steal. There's 6 cars parked close together; an '84 RX-7 GSL-SE, a '96 Chevy Cavalier, a '94 Ford Mustang, a '98 Dodge Stealth, a '98 Civic with park bench spoiler and all, and a couple other Hyundais.

The only cars with alarms are the RX-7, the Civic, and the Mustang. What cars are you going to steal?
Well, the Stealth is a pretty nice car, there's tons of them out there, and they're worth quite a bit of change, the Cavalier could be parted out quite easily, and the hyundais would be fun to drive off a cliff.

Now look at the RX-7, the Civic, and the Mustang... They all have blinking LEDs, and one of them has "the club" on the steering wheel.

I bet he could be into the stealth and driving away before he figured out how to bypass the starter immobilizer relay and fuel pump cut off switch on the RX-7, and the alarm noise from the Civic or Mustang will attract attention: something they don't want, especially if it's a kid.

Ok, so you're saying "What if my car's the only one in sight, and someone's looking for a getaway vehicle?"

DON'T PARK IN DARK PLACES WHERE YOU'RE THE ONLY PERSON PARKED

Park somewhere more high-traffic, it's safer for your car AND you... yes, EVEN if it means waling for an extra 300 feet...

These thing are becoming more and more rare. I believe they are antiques now in Japan... People need parts that aren't produced anymore... At least that's what I've heard... Besides, It's nice to have a challange and be creative with your anti theft options.

I think I'm going to just put a simple on/off switch on the fuel pump power line, and hide it somewhere in my car.

My favorite antitheft device, my brother did this on a car that the steering column was jacked up, : The starter button mounted on the inside of the engine compartment, looks kinda wierd when you start your car but who would ever think to look for the starter button under the hood ?

The fuel pump kill switch is a better idea, in my humble opinion. I also lock my doors, and, my stereo has a removable faceplate, with a blinking red led visable when it's missing. I've never had a problem with theft or damage, no matter where it was parked.

just don't hide the kill switch under the dash - that's the first place they'll look.

Makes sense to put it in the lockable glovebox or behind the seat somewhere - within easy reach but out of sight.

I actually built a smart fuel cut circuit so you just tap a button in the car to engage the fuel pump. There's more to it involving two relays and a voltage regulator, but you can make one at Radio Shack pretty cheap if you just bother to do it and know what a soldering iron is. Pele's idea is good if your car starts easily, but as soon as your voltage drops significantly below 12V, the coil won't have the juice to keep itself closed. As you crank the car, the fuel pump will open again and you'll never get it started. If you run it on a 5 volt regulator (your battery will never get below 5 volts) it will always get fuel under any load. PM me if you want more info.

For keeping your clock settings with a battery cut switch you wire a constant 12v (usually a yellow wire on the deck) directly to the battery.

Battery Kill switches still dont do all that much thou. If they want your car they will just rip some wire outta somewhere and use that to basically jump start your car through. But not many will do it. Im glad i live in the middle of nowhere. If anyone steals my car ill find it in 2 hours and kick some ***.

As for the whole towing thing. Put in one of those things that holds your ggas pedal from going down, only opposite and put it on the brakes. My cars got the 4 disk brakes, they tow it at least 2 tires are gonna be makin some noise

Just take out the rotor bug out of the distributor. It takes a few second to do it and unless the thief has extras in his pocket he's not going anywhere with your car. Thats what I do when I go to a place where rx7 theft is still pretty high.
