Best steering wheel for a 1st gen?
I'm looking to buy a nice red/black combo steering wheel for my '83 rx7. I want it to be smaller than the stock wheel, while not costing an arm and a leg.
Thanks,
Matt

I like Mountney ones ... they do one that looks similar to the stock wheel too ... not sure if they sell them in the US.
I'm considering getting one like this a retrofitting the original centre to keep it looking kind of standard but smaller.

There was a REALLY REALLY nice one I saw while I was over in Austraila.. It was red/black and actually said Mazda in the middle. It was only $130 AUS dollars, and I should have gotten it!

I have an aftermarket 3-spoke wheel on my 84SE with the adaptor that sold for about $100 back about 10 years ago. This wheel is an excellent match for the sports cars of that day and has the classic 'MOMO'-style side spokes which angle downward from the hub, and the bottom spoke is straight down.
IIRC, the company that made it is called Automix or something similar, and sells both the wheels and hubs to fit different cars. The wheel has about 10 stainless hex-head screws around the perimeter that secure it to the center hub.
Slightly larger diameter that stock, however, with power steering, this makes for a very easy-turning wheel.

I have a Grant GT wheel, it's smaller, I can't see 50 mph-75mph on the speedo without having to move my head down. But for the wheel and adapter, I paid around $80 total at either Checker or Autozone, I can't remember. If I had a digi cam, I'd snap a pic. This is what I have

Airflow is my life
LOL, me too! I need to lower my seat or something. Cant see the speedo hardly at all anymore. This is what I have, not perfect, but for $25 you cant beat it. Go check your local autozones for their clearance items!

I'd have to say a good Momo or Sparco 320mm wheel would have to be the way to go. It'll cost a bit more, but the quality is excellent. Both should have the colours you're looking for to.

For those of you that have gone with smaller wheels, is the increase in effort all that noticeable? I would like to get rid of the bus driver sized wheel on my car... but I still want to be able to park it, lol.

I have one by Formuling with MAZDA on the center, got it as a gift, color matches the interior.. its small and with a blown power steering pump..with good tires it feels great for all around driving..but will be a slight pain thru the tight turns on the autoX course.
Grant steering wheels are a good value for the money..go with a MOMO, Nardi or Sparco if youre willing to fork out the bucks.

A nice one IMO is the old sparco lap 3. I just got one for my gf. Clearance price of 164 US. I think I might have to trader her for my momo race.
