You can definitely avoid this. Go to a hydraulics supply place and buy JIC fittings. For the engine side I believe you need 16mm x -8 JIC and 18mm x -8 JIC. I'd confirm those exact dimensions and take a hose with you too. Not too sure on the cooler side. I had adapters welded in.
