best place to install rear speakers?

I am going to buy a new deck and speakers and since I have no compartments behind me (the previous owner removed them and placed a peice of plywood there) I was wondering if mounting say 6 by 9's in boxes there would sound better then the stock rear location. Where do most of you mount your rear speakers?

I replaced all my stock speakers with some nice Boston Acoustics I got cheap. I mounted them all in the stock locations, added an extra set of JBL tweeters in the door panels, and I'm working on adding a couple of Kicker square subs in the bins behind the seats.

Works nice with my Sony Headunit.

put good quality speakers in the stock rear location and build yourself an awsome sub box where the storage boxes used to be. 6x9's suck!

Say what you want about 6x9s sucking, but I did exactly what you're talking about (mounting 6x9s behind the seats in the storage compartments).

It sounds pretty damn nice!!! They are top of the line Alpines.

The only problem is it drowns out the tiny 4" coax's in the stock location; I've been planning to put components in the doors for a while now...

BUT... if I were to do it again, I wouldn't even use rear speakers at all. I would just put the biggest ones I could fit into the doors, and maybe put some 8's behind the seats. My 10' JL box sounds pretty good though, and I can take it out whenever I want.

Thumbs up

Actually that piece of wood over your bins is a great place to put the 6x9s, thats exactly where I put mine in my first RX, just cut holes where the bins would be and instant speaker box. Now in my later years my buddy and I built a large 6x9 box that molded around the back of the hatch. It took time and was heavy but looked good once covered with identical carpet. Every time people heard it they swore I had a sub hidden somewhere too. a really good set of 6x9s (i used Blaupunkt) makes all the difference with a good amp. Hope thats some ideas. Good luck.

take a look at my system, I put another cover over the speaker that matches the rest of the carpet so you can't even tell it's there. I also have kickers in the stock locations at the rear

silverRocket no offence, there isn't anything wrong with 6x9's it's just a personal preference. i just think that the storage area (with the bins removed) is the PERFECT place for a couple of pounding subs, and the stock rear location is can hold a pair of 6" 2-ways, or even mid's.

i like your idea abeomid at one time i was going to make the entire hatch area a giant speaker enclosure, but i still have to carry stuff so that's why i like the storage bin idea so i can still use the hatch area.

jimmy54 that's kinda what i was talking about , maybe even two separate sub enclosures back there. i had all the measurements worked out a few years ago for some subs that didn't require a huge amount of air volume, then i had to rebuild the engine , then i bought a house , etc etc etc i love the double DIN stereo !!

No offence taken!! 6x9s do suck *** compared to wicked components, but they sound good for this purpose, the damn things are behind your seats anyhow! Mine are starting to crap out a bit right now, actually.

We can compare our systems this weekend anyways... mine's not as integrated as Jimmy's or Abeomid's, but I like the ability to take out my sub when I need to.

cool, my system sure won't win any soundoff competitions , but it gets me to work. I have components in the stock front location with the tweeters mounted on the kick panels, and 6" 2 ways in the rear , all Blaupunkt (hate them too, but they were cheap and i was broke) i use a bazooka tube for bass since i can take it out when i need the space.

the future plans (after a possible repaint/suspension/wheels/tires....in other words NEVER ) include either a double DIN reciever or silver color MP3 player to match the dash cover .... some kind of speaker pods with larger than 4" components and properly aimed tweeters for the front....and the afformentioned KICK *** SUBS in the storage bin locations.

Those stock front speaker holes are a joke - I just blew my 3rd set of infiniti 4" coaxials. And I always run caps on them too, they just can't handle ****. So right now I'm running only my 6x9s.

How's your bass tube for SPL? My 10" JL hits quite adequately, Nothing like my old 12" JL and Rockford Punch amp, but my new setup is half the weight. I think the rear hatch area is very very good for enhancing bass properties, I remember comparable setups in my friends' hatchbacks sounding pathetic in comparison.

My sub probably won't come along for the ride this weekend though, I don't like hitting the corners with the potential of it flying around the back. Plus I'll need all the power to weight I can get to keep up with those crazy asses in their 3rd gens. Come to think of it, the spare tire and all the tools I normally keep in the car may not make the trip either....

Hey, did I mention this dude with a T2 swapped in his 1st gen might come out? The guy makes like 270 rwhp. I'm dying to see that car in action.

Your car is missing the buckets and hardware?? I still have mine in the garage mine are burgandy, what color is your interior?? If you want them let me know, I have no use for it. I even got the aluminun shell that hold them and every thing. Since you live in canada you might not live too far. Then just stick your speakers in the stock positions... I filled the stock locations with high end speakers and they sound fine. Later I might just get those tiny tweeters and hide them in the vents. Just for for imaging the sound alittle better. Hope that helps at all. Like I said B4 I have a set a BURGANDY BUCKETS W/ALUMINUM COVERS AND HARDWARE FOR ANYONE THAT NEEDS IT, FOR FREE. I didn't have the heart to throw them away cause they are mint. And I got a spare front bumer complete, that I'd trade for a rear. And if anybody is missing an odd engine part let me know, I might have extra's. (mostly engine components)

i'm only using 1 amp for the whole system right now so the bass i'm getting is more 'musical' than anything else. it's not a system that you'd hear me coming down the street before you see the car. with a proper amp set-up the bazooka tube REALLY thumps!!! The previous owner had two of 'em, which might explain the missing screw in some of the rear trim pieces!

it really improved the sound i was getting from just the Blau's though!

oh, a 270 hp 1st gen......guess my car will have to be the 'BEFORE' picture tomorrow haha

Hey, is your seven 12A? If so, I think we'll be the only ones, and maybe Rxcetera.

As long as I can keep up to someone, I'll be happy

It's cooler to see a bunch of crazy sevens than a whole fleet of stock ones tho.

The vertical section, under the rear edge of the hatch is a nice place for subs. I think a 10 inch will fit there. BadAssRX-7 and some others had a setup there at one point. If you put the carpet back, it's a stealth install. You also don't loose any storage space, and the hatch area supposedly adds to the acoustics.

well i like my L7's(kickers new solos) i have a pair of 8" l7's in the far back against the tail lights. and yes they hit HARD and you cant see them with the carpet down. and there is a false floor to cover the amps so it looks a little odd

right now i'm running a 10" bazooka tube and loving it! i wanted to go stealth, but i found a killer deal on the tube. i've got an alpine cassette head w/ 12 disc changer in the storage bin. it sounds great except for the crappy jensen front speakers. i took some expanding foam("great stuff" in your local hardware store) and filled in some of the areas around the stock rear speakers. then i used layers of duct tape to seal the holes. it seems to make the 6.5's (pioneer) hit a little tighter. i'd like a jbl component system on the door.... 5.25 mid and surface tweet. my first seven(79) had 2 pyramid 12's in a wedge box aimed up and back at the hatch. that hatchback is a boom magnefier! the box was on a 3 inch pedestal that the sunroof fit perfectly under. my second seven had 2 jbl 10's in a ported box aimed straight back. OMG! those things were SO loud! the bass would make your face itch. anyone have any ideas where to mount a front speaker? the kick panels stink, and i was thinking the door, but i have manual windows, and it seems just about anything i do would get in the way of the handle.

Smile Nice setup

Yeah thats a nice setup, i am thinkin of figuring out a new place for my front speakers as well, and the way the back ones are positioned the sound isnt too great. i was thinkin about taking out those compartments behind the seats and putting a sub on each side or just one. Its still hard to get a good sound because of the speakers WAY back there...what i think im going to do is figure out a way to fit bigger speakers up front(nice ones) and leaving the ones i have back there. I am going to experiment a bit.

hey - abeomid...you say u have clear guages with white indiglow, is it possible to see some pics? how do they look? post them or send them here: unfrozencmlawyer@hotmail.com

thanks,
Alex
