Best airfliter for a holley

Hey guys,

Some of ya may remember me. I've been laying low in desparity for the past few months at the fall of my 82. It was sputtering and I swear I checked everything. I was past my end and just kinda 'gave up', didn't really think about 7s or working on it much for a month or two. I heard alot of suggestions, none of which worked. One of the continuing suggestions was to replace the cap and rotor. Since the beginning that was one of the first things I heard to replace. Didn't make sense, my cap and rotor looked corroded but still over all fine. Then the other day I checked and the entire base of the column going down the cap was chewed up! New cap and rotor and my car is running blissfully.

Now I just got myself a Holley setup from another member here. Doesn't come with any sort of filter though. What would be the best filter for me? Try a Racing beat one, or should I just find a universal holley one? Anybody have any unique looking or neat suggestions. I've played with the idea of getting the standard chrome V8 14", but I'd like to go with something a bit more unique.

from what i've read, u should use a 14" dia one. mine's one of those 6 5/8 dia ones from like autozone. i've also used the one from RB. can't really tell a difference between the 2 tho. just don't use the triangle foam one.

Whys that? That was actually my favourite, I'd really like a foam filter. Whats wrong with that triangle one?

A 14" would be better than a 6", right? The way I've always understood it is bigger equals more surface area for air to go thru. Other than the triangle one and the RB model, is there any commercial made foam filters for holleys? I've been thinking about making a cage and then getting some foam to stretch over it, like the foam filters I've seen on webers and such, but I wouldn't know how to go about it.

They don't filter well, they're more restrictive than you'd think, and they tend to deteriorate after a while. I'm using one right now, but that's just because I can't afford anything better yet. I'd stay away from foam filters in general, and go with a cotton gauze design, such as K&N.

Really? Hmm, alright then. I've always been fond of foam filters, I use them on my dirtbikes and they always hold up real well when they are cleaned and soaked in oil regularily.

Also, I know this sounds stupid, but can I expect an open round filter to be louder than the stock mazda blue one? I must say I love the sound of my motor when I have the top lid off my air filter assembly off, I'd like to be able to hear the motor a bit more.

i used a modified K&N CAI off a TBI dodge dakota with a cone filter on mine. it worked pretty good, and got alot of compliments on the way it looked.

Thats a slick intake. Now box in the filter and all your air will be colder.

I had the RB filter setup with the foam filter and when I had it on the dyno it made no change between that and the K&N filter in HP or tq. I ended up going with the K&N because the foam was not holding up well. The K&N is doing great though.

air filter is boxed in on 3 sides, with the aluminum duct feeding from the front air dam into said box. its hard to see because of the angle

lol. the tiedown strap is kind of a torque brace. i kept wearing out motor mounts due to the pulsing vibrations of the port job. ghetto, but functional!
